By 27 February thirteen heavy batteries were assembled on the west bank to deliver ‘bursts of concentrated fire which really constituted independent operations’,34 striking the Germans in the flank as they advanced along the east bank. On 6 March Falkenhayn was forced to attack on the west bank of the Meuse as well, so confirming the effectiveness of the French guns.
