The vision that inspired the cave paintings so long ago may have been similar to the spirituality of modern indigenous hunting communities.11 These tribesmen are disturbed by the fact that their lives depend on the slaughter of the animals they regard as friends and patrons, and they assuage their anxiety in rituals that evoke respect for and empathy with their prey.
