“You know what happens when you run, angel.” Gideon nipped my lower lip with his teeth and then soothed the sting with the caress of his tongue. “I catch you.”
“What I want,” he purred, cupping my jaw and rubbing my bottom lip with the pad of his thumb, “is you being too busy thinking about me to think about anyone else.”
“You hit me the instant I saw you,” he said gruffly. “I couldn’t look away. I wanted you immediately. Excessively. Almost violently.”
“Cool?” he scoffed. “I was on fire for you. I’ve been fucked up ever since.”
“I’d kill for you,” he whispered, “give up everything I own for you . . . but I won’t give you up. Two days is my limit. Don’t ask for more than that; I can’t give it to you.”
“It’s my place to stand beside you, and support you, and yes, just fucking look pretty on your arm sometimes. It’s my right, my duty, and my privilege, Eva, just as it’s yours in reverse.”
Sometimes I wanted to believe something so badly, I deliberately manufactured excuses and ignored painful reality.
“The only way I’m keeping my hands off her is if I’m dead. Find another way to fix us.”
Most suits made the man. Gideon did things to a three-piece suit that should’ve been illegal.
“I’m not sure I like you having a crush on anyone but me, fictional or not.”
“You’re the greatest risk I’ve ever taken.” His pressed his lips gently to mine. “And the greatest reward.”
“If you wanted him, it wouldn’t be enough for me to let you go. I want you too much. I want you with me, in my life, in my bed. If I can have that, nothing else matters. I’m not too proud to take what I can get.”
“Actually, you know what? You keep on thinking I’m God’s gift to women, angel. It’s better for me if you believe I’m the best you can get.”
“I’d rather argue with you, angel, than laugh with anyone else.”
“Big tits, please,” Cary said. “Or bulging muscles. Either will do.” Gideon looked at me. I grinned. “The private nurse.” “Ah.”
THE thing about nightmares was that you couldn’t prepare for them. They sneaked up on you when you were most vulnerable, wrecking havoc and mayhem when you were totally defenseless. And they didn’t always happen while you were sleeping.
Reaching for my hand, he lifted it to his lips and kissed my fingertips. “I love you.”
“People get over love. They can live without it, they can move on. Love can be lost and found again. But that won’t happen for me. I won’t survive you, Eva.” My breath caught at the look on his face when he glanced at me. “I’m obsessed with you, angel. Addicted to you. You’re everything I’ve ever wanted or needed, everything I’ve ever dreamed of. You’re everything. I live and breathe you. For you.”
“Because of you, the world makes sense to me in a way it didn’t before. I have a place now, with you.”
