This was an exciting time for science, akin to that of the ancient Greeks and the Islamic world’s Golden Age, but different in that knowledge advanced more quickly than before. Each discovery created another chink in the armor of organized religion and its claim to power. In the Age of Reason, it became unreasonable to tell a scientist to recite the Penitential Psalms for contradicting Scripture.
