Red Rabbit

Joe found Brother’s skeleton under a hedgerow at the northern end of the field. The old mule’s body had been picked clean by buzzards; there was no sign of his spirit. Joe wondered if Brother had gone on to wherever mules went when they died or if his ghost had simply wandered away from the farm. Joe realized he didn’t know if mules had spirits. He had a lot of questions about death, and he was peeved that no one had told him what to expect after he was rolled up in a yellow bath curtain and dumped in a hole.
