Wherever Rabbit had come from, and whatever had happened to her, Rose bore no responsibility. There was no part of her that was also in Rabbit, and she could look at the child without seeing herself reflected back. She was able to instruct and protect Rabbit without feeling a trace of shame or guilt or anger.
