The Art of Natural History: Botanical Illustrations, Ornithological Drawings, and Other Masterpieces from the Age of Exploration
by
"A magnificent revelation of the great French Vellum collection of Natural History art: the 'King's Collection'... featuring high-fidelity photo reproductions of the original Gouache paintings by the absolute masters of this genre: Nicolas Robert, Nicolas Maréchal,l, Jean-Charles Werner, A.J.B. Vaillant & Nicolas Huet, in particular. Best of all, this massive, >700-page book, with a gorgeous, cloth-topped/bottomed slipcase, is a huge 12" x 16", allowing for many works to be published at full size."

Walton Ford. Pancha Tantra. Updated Edition
by
"This updated edition renewed my love for the 'Pancha Tantra', Ford's epic-in-paintings, telling the story of mankind's relationship with the animal kingdom via giant-sized watercolors, taking on the style of Audubon's plein-air field studies, but using Symbolist imagery & Surrealist absurdities... with stylistic diversions that are always era-appropriate. It would be #1, but it's topped too many of my lists already. What's remarkable is how obvious it seems that 'Pancha Tantra' - the massive book he's been updating for a decade, and will continue updating with every new series of paintings - is his magnum opus... the art object/monograph that promises to grow deeper & richer as Ford continues to expand his visionary subject into terra incognita."

Walton Ford. Pancha Tantra
by
"This was the 2015 revised edition, shrinking down from the XL, 12"x15" format to 10"x13", but upping the page-count with another 40+ new paintings."

Unnatural Selection
by
"Katrina Van Grouw is fucking genius: a prodigiously auto-didactic lay scientist & a brilliant fine artist. Like Walton Ford's 'Pancha Tantra', Van Grouw's 'Unnatural Selection' is a multi-faceted art monograph that transcends its labels. It's a profusely illustrated treatise on what the last few millennia of selective breeding in the populations of domesticated species can demonstrate about evolutionary biology. It's also a profusely annotated monograph on the natural history art of Katrina Van Grouw, published by Princeton University Press. Regardless what version you're interested in owning, you shan't be disappointed*.

*[If you do acquire this beautiful book, & somehow decide it's not worth the cover price (her last monograph, 'The Unfeathered Bird' quickly went out of print, & the price went stratospheric), you're not someone I want to know. Fuck you & your shitty taste in everything.]" See Review |

The Art & Science of Ernst Haeckel
by
"Another massive, beautifully produced XXL Taschen hardcover, this time celebrating a lesser-known art luminary in Ernst Haeckel, the ground-breaking micro-biologist whose engravings of the geometrically complex & amazingly symmetrical forms of the Radiolarian micro-organisms, as well as his later monograph 'Art-Forms in Nature', a fusion of art & science employing 'comparative morphology', would astonish readers throughout the second half of the 19th Century."

American Fried Rice: The Art of Mu Pan

"Unnatural History Art of the very bestest kind. Species does vicious war with genus, & no family, order or class is safe, threatening the very phylums that hold our kingdom together. Linnaeus would be overjoyed."
