Terri, I have this book and actually got about a third of the way through it.(Book III)But, I realized too late that there are different translated versions of the book. Some are translated to a more modern tongue, which makes it much easier to read. I, regretfully, did not know this before buying the book and bought a version that was translated in 1890. Not good.
Look for one translated by Robin Waterfield. I heard it was better.

You're talking about Herodutus, right? I'll have to check which one I have now! But, you're right though, the translation can make all the difference in enjoyment.

I'm sorry. Yes, I was referring to Herodotus. The book I have is painful to read.

Also, I have read and enjoyed Things Fall Apart very much. (an excellent book club book by the way)

Yep, I agree. I read it a long time ago in college. Don't remember much of it, so it's been on my list to reread for a while. I think we've only done one African book. That would be a good choice. There are many others too. Cry, The Beloved Country is also a good choice too.
