The Gentle Art of Making Enemies
by
"Witty and instructive, includes his great libel trial against Baronet Ruskin, who called him a cockney--while JMW was from an arguably higher, new social class of international business. I taught this at the Swain Shool of Design, along with Vasari.

Vasari's Lives of the Artists: Giotto, Masaccio, Fra Filippo Lippi, Botticelli, Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, Titian
by
"I read most of this in Italian, so cannot vouch for this translation, but it is rich and essential: I taught it in my course at Swain School of Design, New Bedford, in "The Artist as Writer" a weekly seminar in Melville's sister's house.

Just Looking: Essays on Art
by
"Arguably, Updike was a better artist than writer, or he confused art's tactility and writing's feeling, so his writings on art are felt--and witty. I Used these in my Artist as Writer seminar at Swain School of Design.

Life with Picasso
by
"Fine, perhaps disillusioning portrait of a not-so-fine man. I recall an all-Picasso show in Montreal that disgusted me with the big P's anatomical dissections and reassemblages--of women. Perhaps he was a narcisistic Trumpster before our Clown Prince.

National Gallery of Art: Washington
by
"I learned much from a summer at the Folger where I enjoyed this collection, and re-enjoyed in JW's book. I had seen the Metropolitan--pieces of it, the Boston MFA, National Gallery of Art London, National Portrait Gellery (my fave as student of 17C England), the Scottish National Gallery, Pinocoteca Brera (Milan)--but the Mellon's gifts (and of course now the American Wing with Calders) make ours competitive.
