The Lady Elizabeth

"Despite being written by a historian, this book is wildly inaccurate and insulting to Queen Elizabeth I. There is absolutely no evidence that she was anything but the virgin she claimed to be, and certainly none for the ridiculous scenario depicted in the book, where she bears a stillborn child that is then burned in a fire to cover up its birth. An alternative I would suggest is Beware, Princess Elizabeth by Carolyn Meyer."

The Tale of Despereaux

"While this book might appear to be a cute story about a mouse, it is largely about the merciless and sadistic abuse of a young girl. Appallingly, the author seems to revel in her torment and scoff at the idea that she might dream of being a princess. As alternatives, I would recommend Redwall by Brian Jacques, The Deptford Mice by Robin Jarvis, and Poppy by Avi."
