Sallie When it was first written collective Savannah was HORRIFIED. Wouldn't talk about it. What a terrible scandal. But then....lo and behold jillions of tourists came to town to retrace steps, see the cemetery, spend $$ in the shops, etc. and suddenly? They loved it! A whole industry sprang up around it - tours, etc. - and they continue to this day.

lol! THAT IS SO FUNNY! Thank you for telling me that as I cracked up laughing. I imagine they were horrified as the South cannot put up with that stuff. But we all love tourists. I am on Cloud 9 when they buy my paintings. They flood in here every summer. There are a few leaf peepers here now for the aspens. I sold a small photo of the aspens for $30.00!!

Sallie We call them leaf peepers here in VA, too. There is a space of two weeks when you avoid the Blue Ridge Pkwy. & the Skyline Drive because traffic creeps along at 10 MPH - people looking and taking pics.

I first heard the term leaf peepers when my husband and I went up to Vermont to see my sister and the fall color! The maples there are brilliant red. There were leaf peepers everywhere and it was like that. My mother was a leaf peeper all her life but of course we had never heard that term. We relate to the Bliss Carmen poem about autumn. "There is something in the autumn that is native to my blood....or something like that. I should do a neverending quiz question, LOL! ;-)
One year my niece got about 30 maple leaves for me and mailed them to me in Texas where there is very little fall. I used to have framed pictures of fall leaves. In fall I wear aspen leaf jewelry here. Some are dipped in gold and others have a clear plastic so the orignal color is preserved.

A total Leaf Peeper,
Alice

Will search for it now, thanks! I love poems about fall. I put mine on the neverending quiz and then discovered that Thom had done the same one.
