"An attempt at the great Canadian novel. A sweeping story of the birth and modern development of Canada including the perspectives of the indigenous peoples, the original British colonists and modern politicians - especially the patriation of the constitution from Britain in 1982. The story is told through the interaction of several complex characters - a British Earl whose ancestors founded the Hudson's Bay Company, a Spanish Countess who wants to make restitution to the aboriginal peoples through her devotion to a Mohawk saint, an elderly Indian leader, a corrupt Federal official and a young man at Oxford University caught up in all these different cosmologies as he tries to understand his own past and future connection with Canada."
