"This is a brilliant satire of academia, so cleverly constructed that there is no way to imagine it could have been written any other way. The allusions, the wit, the laugh-out-loud hilarity and the characters--the marvelous characters. This should absolutely have beaten Hotel Du Lac for the Booker in 1984. It is astonishing that the panel could have got it so completely wrong that year."

"Probably the most astonishingly constructed novel since Pale Fire, this is an utterly wonderful experience from cover to cover (and journal to letter to memoir and back again). It is more than one breathtaking journey. It is one of the greatest novels of the twenty-first century and will assuredly still be ranked high when the century is over."

Antonomasia You may be interested in the comments about the 1984 Booker here, from the curmudgeonly and unashamedly biased chairman: http://www.theguardian.com/books/2011...
(scroll down to paragraph headed "the truth about Angela Carter"). Though it looks as if they didn't consider Lodge a serious contender. A vintage year, that shortlist, nonetheless.
