The Book Thief
by
"My copy of this book by an Australian writer is in its 34th printing. The narrator (a busy but thoughtful Death who carries souls to their destination) presents the life-affirming story of a 13-year-old girl, Liesel, who is given up by a Communist mother to save her from the Nazis. Liesel starts by stealing a book, and goes on to steal some more from someone who welcomes her interest in books. Meanwhile her foster family takes a great risk and hides a Jewish man. A fine tale in a small village outside Munich. The story of World War II is brought down to a human level."
