A History of Western Philosophy

"The scope is, well, encyclopedic - but the text is pretty clear, and has a nice human touch. That said, it IS pretty biased and there are some quite important factual errors - often related to Russell's personal views. But it's certainly one of the books to start with if you want to see 'what philosphy was'"
