The Good Earth (House of Earth, #1)

"I read this when I was about 11. It was my first big novel dealing with another culture, although I'd read shorter books before. This was perhaps the first epic type book I ever read, and the vivid pictures it opened in my mind stay with me today. "

Iberia
by
"Sentimental favorite from my college years. Read this before I went to Spain in May of 1977, 18 months after the death of Franco during some very interesting times in Spain. I met Robert Vavra, the photographer for the book while I was there. I have a Picture of him standing in the dappled shade by his house holding up two bird cages. I painted a watercolor from the photo. The stark photos go well with this non-fictional tour of Spain by Mitchner. "

Palace Walk (The Cairo Trilogy, #1)
by
"Great work of Egyptian literature...read the sequels, too - Palace of Desire, and Sugar Street. The Three are called the Cairo Trilogy. Get a feel for Modern (WWII and post- WWII) Egypt clashing with the old. "

The Ten Grandmothers: Epic of the Kiowas (Volume 26) (The Civilization of the American Indian Series)
by
"Eye opening, sad, and touching. Makes you realize that your worldview is not the only one. Clashing cultures, and vast misunderstandings, even among those who think they are being helpful. "
