You might have been a bit too enthusiastic... The description says "anything that makes the reader laugh and smile". You've deleted Pride and Prejudice, for instance, but that's one that can definitely make me laugh... And as a result I had voted for it. Jane Austen had a very sharp pen and can be extremely witty. Personally I don't think Pride and Prejudice should have been deleted.

Monty Circus Conversely, I think you're taking "anything that makes the reader laugh and smile" too literally. Nearly every book ever written has at least some elements of humour in it, but not every book is primarily a "humorous book". It seems the vast majority of GoodReaders categorizes P&P as a romantic drama. Like I said, if "humor" didn't make the top 100 shelves for a book (To be safe I didn't even limit it to top 10 shelves, I went all the way to top 100!), I think it's pretty safe to say it's not primarily a humorous book. This list should be a place for them to shine. The likes of The Hunger Games, Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings belong on other lists.

I did a Google search for "Pride and Prejudice is hilarious." It returned 7 results.

I did another for "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is hilarious." It returned 2,880 results.

This is despite the fact that P&P has (according to GoodReads), been read by nearly double the number of people.

(have you even shelved P&P under "humor" yourself?).

The defense rests!

I never said it was 'hilarious'... It is just very witty and definitely able to make me smile and laugh (which, in my humble opinion, is not the same as being hilarious). And to answer your question: No, I haven't shelved the book under 'humor'. None of my books are shelved under 'humor', although several can make me laugh.

But I guess it is up to Steven Harbin, the creator of this list, to decide what he meant when he wrote "anything that makes the reader laugh and smile".

BookLovingLady (deceased Jan. 25, 2023...) @Monty
As the desciption of the list says "Fiction, non fiction, anything that makes the reader laugh and smile", I've decided to vote for Pride and Prejudice again, for the above mentioned reasons.

Hi: sorry if this is redundant to what others might have asked, but yesterday I added a book to this list and today I found it listed at the very end with no mention that I had voted for it, so I clicked the vote for this book button again. Now it's saying 2nd on my list. So I have no idea what exactly is going on. Also on the book's page it doesn't even mention that the book is on any list even after I clicked buttons to add that book to a number of different lists. Any ideas?
Adventures In Avalon: An Offbeat & Quirky Adult Bedtime Story

Thank you!

I don't really find John Greene to fall in the comedy category...

William Stephens Some of these look great. I added one by an independent author that I thought was hilarious, Trojan Hearse. Didn't think I could find anything funny on the War on Terror.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads gave you an answer in Family Saga Novels, which you acknowledged by saying All right. Thanks for letting me know. Hope you've got plenty of good books to read, and movies to read. :). Yet now you put your book in the comment section? Not nice...

Lori Where is Thurber? Am I just old? I recommend Is Sex Necessary, and pretty much everything he wrote.

message 65: by Mallory (new)

Mallory Read anything by Betty MacDonald, starting with "The Egg and I" - they're hilarious!

message 66: by Ellen (new)

Ellen I will look. Thank you. I do not have a deft hand at getting around on GoodReads. Be well.

tsipura Homing by Marc Luc Carrier is a fast paced entertaining book about the adventures and misadventures of a son grappling with his deme ntia afflicted father on a road trip from Florida to Montreal. In this bittersweet tale our antihero confronts the absurdities of life, and humour becomes a coping mechanism. Anyone who has ever had a difficult parent will enjoy a much needed laugh.
