Catherine I feel that just because a book is a classic, doesn't necessarily mean that it's a great book.
I read The Last of the Mohicans, Jane Eyre, Tale of Two Cities and I loved them, but then I read Turn of the Screw and I hated it.

You are right about that. Emma and Madame Bovary are considered classics and I hated both of them.

Scout Not sure where your comment is coming from. Is it to inform? If so, I would love to understand your meaning.

message 4559: by Kate (new)

Kate I'm not loving this list, it's not very diverse and frankly boring.

message 4560: by Jeffrey (new)

Jeffrey Gao I would if that low rent Attila the Hun didn’t have her story at the top. Remember Katniss Everdeen is an evil poacher and coal miner’s spawn who hates Huns for no reason and that Emperor Coriolanus is the true hero!

message 4563: by Mike (new)

Mike I immediately laughed on seeing this list. Numbers 1 and 2 make a laughingstock of the list. Why would anyone look further?

Jeffrey Gao Mike wrote: "I immediately laughed on seeing this list. Numbers 1 and 2 make a laughingstock of the list. Why would anyone look further?"

Nah, the real laughingstock is Orwell’s papers and Atlas Shrugged!

message 4565: by Kaija (new)

Kaija Bear I respect the author and all but how did twillight end up on there, the first time you read it you fall in love but after it just gets annoying,
tell me if i am wrong,

Twilight's not so bad; Edward is just a creepy stalker, Bella is bland and ungrateful, and Leah Clearwater should have her own stand alone movie.

message 4567: by Drew (new)

Drew D Lol, Hunger Games as number one. We all know the greatest book of all time is Captain Underpants.

message 4574: by Denise (new)

Denise Temple I have decided that I am going to approach this list to simply read something I have not read before and to re-read something I have forgotten I once enjoyed. (Makes me sound ancient? no, I will go with Vintage.) Lists are taken to seriously in some cases and I would rather find a new book here to love than fight about top books in general.

message 4575: by Catherine (new)

Catherine I don't feel that people have to list all classics.
I loved Fourth Wing and Ransom by Julie Garwood.

message 4576: by [deleted user] (new)

I think the Outsiders was pretty good but the ending was sad

message 4578: by Lu Anne (new)

Lu Anne I don't think anyone would say it's a pleasant book, just that it's well written.

message 4579: by Lu Anne (new)

Lu Anne I wish that the books not originally written in English but have been translated had the English title listed. I may have read it but not recognized the title.

Yes!! The Bible should be 1st on there for sure!!

message 4596: by Diana (new)

Diana No, the Bible should not be on this list. All the books listed are novels. The Bible is a reference, a text not a novel. Oh, hmmm - maybe it is?!

Kenna Diana wrote: "No, the Bible should not be on this list. All the books listed are novels. The Bible is a reference, a text not a novel. Oh, hmmm - maybe it is?!"

Hmm...good point. The books stated are novels, but the Bible does include many stories! It could be debated both ways :-)

If the The Book of Mormon is on there, though...I mean, I don't think that The Book of Mormon would be considered a novel, do you? If that's on there, I think the Bible should be, too. <3

I consider the Bible to be a set of guidelines. 'Book of Mormon' - total fiction.

You have a great point. The Bible is completely true where the 'Book of Mormon' is not.

According to ChatGPT when asked the question "Is the Bible a novel?":

ChatGPT
The Bible is a collection of religious texts and scriptures sacred to Christianity and Judaism, among other faiths. It contains a variety of literary genres, including historical narratives, poetry, wisdom literature, and prophecy. While some parts of the Bible might resemble elements of a novel, such as character development and plot, its primary purpose is religious and spiritual guidance rather than purely fictional storytelling. However, some biblical stories, like those of David and Goliath or the prodigal son, can be appreciated for their narrative qualities akin to those found in novels.

So...

We could debate this for a while :-)
