Pam Keenliside To Kill a Mocingbird should be on everyone's list.

message 102: by Pam (new)

Pam Keenliside A Thousand Spendid Suns and The Kite Runner are must reads for Americans who know neither how the Taliban operates nor the cruel treatment of women in Muslim countries.

yuck! Sorry, I don't mean to be rude, but not even the title sounds interesting.

I call it writing and I'm beyond 8th grade. And I'm not meaning to be rude but why does it matter that Renee Dodd is a granddaughter of an Atlanta icon? Just curious...

message 105: by Pam (new)

Pam Keenliside This list is a great idea--I saw several on the list that I would like to read.

Please, I cannot believe that Strephenie Myers is at the top. In the 8th grade, I would have loved this book. I am an English teacher, and I cringe each time a student writes a review on a Stephenie Myers book. I do not have to read the whole series--8th grade girls are doing it for me!

message 106: by Pam (new)

Pam Keenliside Everybody--Please read The Cabinet of Wonders by Renee Dodd--it is a wonderful peek at the relationships that haunt the world of carnivals and circuses. You will love it.

Who spelt "the" wrong? Me? Well, I couldn't find it anywhere on mine and if I did then it was an accident, called a typo. And when does a typo have anything to do with not paying attention?

message 113: by PJ! (new)

PJ! i think they should add "Gone" by Michael Grant
it's so life changing
and your point of view on the world changes just cause of this book!!!!!

message 114: by Barbara (new)

Barbara Sorry David, I'm 50 and reading the Twilight series. It's just plain old fun. Reading a book is like looking at a painting, you look at one and you may walk away with a profound message and another you just walk away smiling and not really understanding why, for me such is the case with Twilight.

message 115: by Samia (new)

Samia Yes Sathwika.
You do have the rights to express yourselves.
BUT, don't talk badly about Stephanie Meyer!
I'm not talking badly about any of YOUR favorite authors, am i?!

message 116: by Samia (new)

Samia Thank you Stephanie for proving that the Twilight convoersation IS over!
I love Twilight, and the Host, and I don't really care if anyone else doesn't!

message 117: by Samia (last edited Jun 23, 2009 11:41AM) (new)

Samia Have you read the Twilight series, or The Host, Katherine?
Your not too old.
No one is ever to old to enjoy a good book. =)

message 118: by Samia (new)

Samia The Host is written, most definitley, beautifuly.
It is so detailed, and you can feel the Melanie and Wanda's pain, happiness, sadness, anger...etc.

BTW typos r a different way of saying "mistake" which happens when u don't pay attention.

No, I'm not kidding you. Besides not every classic is good. Have you read The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolikien? I wouldn't say HORRIBLE since I did enjoy some of it but it is pretty bad.

I don't know...but I'm getting tired of having to defend a talented author, from those that disagree. I was just hoping for a subject change, but, hey, if you want to keep on talking about an author YOU don't like then go for it. I'll be here defending Stephenie Meyer the whole way.

message 128: by Samia (new)

Samia Yes me too.
I've only read The Host once, but I'm definitley going to read it again.

message 129: by Samia (new)

message 141: by Sathwika (new)

Sathwika BTW stephanie,
I reccomend TO KILL A MOCKING BIRD. I know the title is confusing.(LOL) but if you read this great book you will understand why. This is about real struggle that will emotionally conect with the reader.
I hope u read it and sorry about the whole "twilight" thing but it's just an opinion so don't take it so seriously.

So were cool about the Stephanie Meyer thing, right?
I mean, you don't have to like her, but some people, (not you) are really mean to her.
Yeah, I like J.K Rowling too. (Harry Potter)
I've heard about Dan Brown. (Angels and Demons)

As a long time teacher I find it alarming to hear the statistics regarding young people and their lack of recreational reading. I agree...if it results in some reading taking place, maybe that enjoyment will continue to grow.
