I think these lists are a bit silly, are they not? "Best" is a subjective thing, I feel like we as readers shouldn't be at each others throat like this over something as trivial as a good or bad book, some people read a book such as Pride and Prejudice and see it as a literary masterpiece, which to it's credit it's objectively good. But I look at it and I see something less than desirable (I've tried to read it, I find myself bored with the characters). We all have different tastes and ranking books like this is pointless because we're never going to agree on the overall "Best" or "Worst" book because like I said at the very beginning of this comment, best and worst is subjective. Ranking things on lists like this where everyone can contribute is a network for arguments. Everyone should make their OWN best book list, of books that THEY love. Every book is good in its own way, so ranking them is pointless (Minus a few books..there are some books that just..shouldn't..be created..looking at those weird smut books..) But I digress, this post is just a shout into the void of a teenager going through their angsty phase.

You’re right of course, but I believe that even classics go through popular phases and I suppose it is interesting to know which ones are popular if you are teaching Literature and want to stay current with the trends. It isn’t worth arguing over, it’s just interesting.

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is listed at both #4 and #91. There may be other duplicates. Please check the list before adding a new book.

Not anymore it is not! I am glad as Truman Capote wrote it to help out his friend.

The Fourth Wing was a great book. I loved Violet and Xandan. I can't wait to continue their story ion Iron Wing. I should be reading that next year.

I've never been able to answer this question whenever I have been asked. There are just WAAAYYY too many great books to narrow it down to just one best book ever. JMHO

Each person has their own reading preferences.
I like some angst, but not lot. I like a couple who are different from each other, like sunshine and grump. Makes for a stronger story, for me.

this list is unfair, it should be based off of average rating. obviously the more popular books are gonna be higher

I think it depends on you and if you want to read the book. Just because a book is popular, doesn't mean everyone wants to read it. I read what I like and if I'm not into it, I'll stop.

democracy works better at scale, the more we vote, the better it gets and incentivizes others to as well.

additionally, a combination of average rating, number of ratings and votes would be useful. average rating may not be the best if 10 people think one book is a 5 as opposed to 10,000 people thinking a book is a 4.8 for example

Why do people get so mad about certain books being top books, this is what goodreads members are voting for because it's what they like. There are books I enjoy that are not classic, or what one may consider the best literature book ever but everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Personally if a book helps me escape reality, stress and I can imagine the characters and story as a movie playing in my head it's good to me. If it can make me laugh, cry or have any feeling other than wanting to burn it, then that is good to me as well.

I feel when people are judgmental on what someone should read especially to young kids this just discourages them from reading at all and that is just sad in itself.

I've had people make comments in my personal life like "as much as you read you should be smarter" that's like telling someone "as much makeup as you put on you should be prettier" or "as much dieting as you do, you should be thinner". Point is people read what they enjoy and just because you don't like their choices it doesn't make you any better than they are.

I wish people would just be kinder, enjoy what you read, recommend what you read without being a judgmental douche lol - no offense

If you can do it without the least discernible trace of irritation or sarcasm the next time someone says "as much as you read..." look them straight in the eye and say, in a tone of complete innocence, "I don't read to be ..., I read to escape the people in my life" then wait to see how long it takes for them to get it. If you have to, like it's your boss, then "Present company excepted, of course." Just as "A gentleman is never rude unintentionally" a lady is never rude (but it's only rude if you get caught).😇

I don't get angry, but I say what I think about the book. For example," the book wasn't as good as I thought it would be. I got bored with it, it wasn't well written, so I read about 75 pages, then back to the library it went.

Reading is subjective - we all like different things. It shouldn't matter what we like, what we read; as long as we're reading.
