Alexis (Ally) Kendall I find it really interesting how many "classic" novels (Wuthering Heights, Fahrenheit 451, Catcher in the Rye, etc) are represented in the top 100 considering many of us were required to read them in school. Do people read these books for personal enjoyment? Because I know I will never read them again, lol.

message 4452: by Catherine (new)

Catherine I only read a few for personal enjoyment; Little Women, A Tale of Two Cities, and Jane Eyre.
I even read Bury My Heart On Wounded Knee. That was a very good book about the struggles The Native Americans went through.
I also tried A Turn of The Screw by Henry James buy I did not like it, at all. The writing was not for me.

message 4453: by Catherine (new)

Catherine Correction: Sorry, that title is Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee.

Turns out school required reading lists have bad taste.

kai ✫꩜ it is really weird to me that so many "classics" are on this list (i'm a "classics" hater, they are not my thing), i just think that people need to really look and reflect on whether it is a good, well-written piece of revolutionary literature or if it is just an old book that people declared was a "classic" and now is over praised? its like the first couple of Star Wars movies, they are not cinematic masterpieces, realistically they are pretty bad, but they are considered "classics" and they are now a big part of pop culture so we all just ignore it and pretend they are amazing.

*note: im not a total star wars hater, i have seen every live action star wars movie and show to date, so don't come after me

message 4472: by kai ✫꩜ (new)

kai ✫꩜ also, why in the f is hitchhikers guide to the galaxy in the top 50?

I know for sure Catcher in the Rye and literally any dystopias don’t deserve to be called classics. Same with Gone with the Wind because Checkmate Lincolnites renders that Lost Cause BS from Mitchell redundant.

Plenty actually!

message 4476: by Catherine (new)

Catherine Red, White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston has been moving up, for me, since the movie came out. (4 star book, right now.)
The Bride & Ransom by Julie Garwood
A Knight In Shining Armor by Jude Deveraux
There's 1 non-fiction book on my list: Bury My Heart On Wounded Knee.

So, you not respecting our opinion that twilight is garbage is fine but we have to respect yours that it is good? Twilight is garbage. You liking it just means you like garbage, not that the book is good. I like smut. It aint good literature but i enjoy it. See how i dont conflate my liking of a thing with it being high quality? People like mcdonalds, are you saying a big mac is as good as a ribeye steak from a 5 star chef? More people eat burger than that ribeye, does that make burgers better? Bugger off hypocrite.

message 4481: by Catherine (new)

Catherine Everyone has their own favorite book and if it's 50 Shades of Grey or Twilight, I don't comment. Just because I don't like 50 Shades of Grey, doesn't mean some else loves it.
My favorites are The Wedding & Ransom by Julie Garwood (5 star books)
A Knight IN Shining Armor by Jude Deveraux (5 star book)
and Red, White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuistion (4 star book)
(Not sure of the spelling her last name)

Just because people like it, doesnt mean its good literature. People like limericks, comic books, and dear pent house letters. Are you telling me they are just as well written as Stranger in a Strange Land, Huck Finn, and All Quiet on the Western Front? Because if you are im going to have to point and laugh. Many titles have no business on this list. Twilight for example. Its horribly written teenage angst. You, or anybody, may like it, but its still poorly written trash. Nobody is out there claiming McDonalds is good food, just that they like it for one reason or another. Same thing.

Ok, so? I dont know what that series is about. Is it as bad as Twilight and 50 shades? Or is this a, "He mentioned mostly stuff girls like so im mentioning guy stuff." Sort of thing? I didnt mention Twilight because it is for ladies. I did it because it uses tired tropes, extensive filler, has no character growth, and the main character has all the personality of a cardboard cutout while also being very self centered and narcissistic. Now, you may like it, but liking something doesnt make it good or well crafted. McDonalds and off brands prove that. So, is the series bad or are you just mad?

message 4484: by Jeffrey (new)

Yes and both Mockingjay and Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes ruined it. Hence, they are forever considered rebellion propaganda.

So because a fictional series had some rebellions you have to hate on the author? Maybe she just wanted to have some fun writing. As well, Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes just shows that some people don't choose their destinies. Snow never wanted his fate, until it was forced on him by one rash decision.
