Pia these books should be differentiated based on their genre. How are we even supposed to go through the list?

I personally don't enjoy books like Twilight because they aren't that interesting and don't have any real take away other than the fact that it's a self-indulgent romance. That being said, you can't argue that Bach is always better than My Chemical Romance for the same reason that others can't argue that Twilight is always better than a classic like, say, Dracula.

These are all opinions, so this book isn't really a compilation of the best books of all time, but rather, a compilation of Goodreads users' favorite books of all time.

also, it's kind of hard to compare the quality of two different books or two different artists when they come from such different times. Maybe if Bach was around today he would write pop music. It just wasn't really a thing in his time. Maybe if Bram Stoker was around today, Dracula would be written in texts or emails because nobody writes letters anymore. You aren't accounting for the passage of time.

We're all a little biased. Everyone is entitled to their opinions as long as they aren't hurting others.

Unless you voted for a religious text because you are of that religion and not because of the actual merit the writing has. That just feels forced.

message 4253: by HALLE (new)

HALLE I'm almost personally offended that Twilight is on the same list as anything by Edgar Allen Poe.

I respect that. I wasn't a huge fan of To Kill a Mockingbird, either. I believe most classics have some sort of merit because why would they still be considered classics, otherwise? That being said, To Kill a Mockingbird had an incredibly confusing and inconsistent plot. Between the kids, Boo, and the trial, too much was happening at once. there are always going to be a few classics that just don't stand the test of time... and unfortunately, there will always be people who don't want to admit that.

I love 'Pride and Prejudice' by Jane Austen!

message 4256: by [deleted user] (new)

There needs to be a way to differentiate between genres. You can't put Dostoyevski and Rowling for example, on the same list. Harry Potter maybe is the best children's fantasy book, but Crime and Punishment is the best historical realistic fiction book i.e. With this general "best books ever" a lot of books are being inevitably sidelined and it ends up reflecting the current popularity trends (a book that a lot of people have read ends up being on top 10, even if it's not objectively the best)

message 4257: by [deleted user] (new)

Also, there is a disturbing lack of cultural diversity. How can only Agglo-Saxon / American authors be on the top? Books shouldn't have a nationality label.

message 4258: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Folks, this is a list a member created and during the course of time the list expanded into what we see today because other members are encouraged to add titles to the list.

I have stated this before: This is a silly list and not a contest. If you are not happy with this list you could always create your own list.

Art is subjective no matter what cannon that art was launched from.

message 4259: by Maddie (new)

Maddie My idea of the best book ever would be....

After Series

Bitten

Amulet

The Lying Games (Pretty Little Liars Series)

The Vampire Diaries

Supernatural

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

Fifty Shades

message 4260: by Reader38 (new)

Reader38 Twilight? Twilight is the fifth-best book ever? I'm simultaneously amused and concerned.

You can go for movie also, it's really amazing it is based on Faith and forgiveness. If you want to.

message 4264: by ~☆~Autumn (new)

~☆~Autumn The movie is almost always worse than the book so there is no way I would see the movie. The way God and Jesus were portrayed were very bad and this guy used drugs. He was irresponsible.

A person should show some respect and there was no respect in this book.

tbh I would argue that My Chemical Romance is better than Bach but since that is purely an opinion I also respect your view that Bach trumps MCR (my point is that literature can be good without having objective *depth* if it's entertaining to a large number of people)
anyway this list is just a giant matter of opinion so if Twilight is that high on the list, Stephanie Meyer must be doing something right

message 4271: by Zoe (new)

Zoe Ashbaugh Everyone needs to relax. These are just what people voted for, they don't have to be your favorite books but it's the list. Make your own list if you're so annoyed.

message 4272: by Patxi (new)

Patxi Plá Only valid for English Language and the so-called Western Hemisphere. But O.K. Do not miss out on our heroes: Borges, Copi, Cortazar, Bolaño, and Levrero. Leonora Carrington, Elena Garro, Amparo Dávila. Well, I guess it is our secret in the South.

Don't worry Patxi. In the Czech Republic at least, I consider the Borges, Bolaño and Cortazar books to be quite well-known. Probably more than 10 Borges books and 6 or 7 Bolaño and Cortazar books are translated into Czech and sold in almost every bookstore. Not a secret anymore! I will check the other authors as well as I am keen to dig in into the South American and Central American authors as well.

message 4279: by Virginia (new)

Virginia this list is ridiculous. I loved The Hunger Games when I read it but honestly, does anyone really think it is the best book ever written?

message 4280: by Free Fire (new)

Free Fire 2 A great List of Books . I am thankful for this List. I have read many books found a lot of information from this website.
I also share these books with my friends and my family.

message 4281: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca VDL The Notebook? So this list isn't serious then.

message 4282: by Jeffrey (new)

Jeffrey Gao Tell me The Dinosaur Lords is on this list.

message 4283: by Amy Noelle (new)

Amy Noelle Twilight is #5 and Anne Rice's Interview with the Vampire is #99?!! Proof this list is absolute madness & total garbage.

message 4284: by [deleted user] (new)

I love the book 'Pride and Prejudice'.

message 4285: by Mark (new)

Mark Leta I love that people get up in arms about these lists, and have been since 2008. Worth the price of admission to see people's passion for books spill out in the comments...

message 4286: by Norma (last edited Aug 02, 2021 09:20AM) (new)

Norma I get a good laugh when ever I read this list. The fact that people get up set over what other people pick as their # 1 book is Ok with me. Remember people thought books would die once e- readers became popular. I am a lover of a good story and good writing. Keep reading and posting. Remember that is why reading makes us all say I love this book over another book. Always Keep Reading. !!

message 4287: by Al (new)

Al I love how I had to scroll through multiple pages to find Thus Spoke Zarathustra and Candide because apparently, they aren't as good as Harry Potter :D

message 4288: by Jade (new)

Jade Seeing the Harry Potter books make me sad because I'm rereading them and the last book is on this list...The last book is honestly depressing but also amazing.

message 4289: by Jemil (new)

Jemil Metti I just released my book Refugee on a Pendulum. It deals with the refugee crisis in the Middle East, and the long term toll it takes on the perpetrator as well as the victim.

I'm afraid you've missed the point of the list, which is here to infuriate people like me! Those are very well known writers in the western hemisphere. Some of them can be described as geniuses of literature. That's why they aren't on the list. I can't say more without grievously insulting people who think that Suzanne Collins (who ffs?) is a better writer than Dostoevsky, Marquez, Sterne, etc

message 4296: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Charlotte I think the list is good enough. I particularly like non-fiction books. There are a few in the list. However it's okay.
