Jocelyn Everyone is complaining about the list because it doesn't match their opinions... clearly all of these books are popular and if it isn't your interest, that doesn't make the list invalid. "Best Books Ever" means different things to different people-- ex. Twilight was voted because people loved it, it was exciting and kept their interest. Other books were voted because they had meaning, and others because they were well written. You can't judge a list because it doesn't meet your personal thoughts, just as you can't judge a book because it was different than what you were "expecting" prior to opening it.

message 3954: by Monteninsky (new)

Monteninsky Obviously, people usually vote for mainstream works rather than immortal classics or even good books (regardless of the date they were written, of course).

For this reason we see in the top works like "Twilight".

message 3957: by Bill (new)

Bill My apologies if this has been brought up before, but it's also important to note that there are a lot of GoodReads users who haven't read that many books yet. A younger user may have primarily read young adult books, in which case those will be the ones they vote for. It would be insincere for someone to vote for something as a "best" book if they haven't read it yet.

message 3958: by Atlia (new)

Atlia Never liked anything mormon myself so this book alone is definately no no to me!

Nullifidian Meredith wrote: "This list is whiter than a pumpkin spice latte."

Considering that a pumpkin spice latte, along with all forms of coffee, is brown, that's not a hard thing to achieve. You're also whiter than a pumpkin spice latte. What of it? Do you think we should have a racial quota system for the books people like? How could you possibly make that happen except by dictating to people which books they must like? "No, you can't like that book. It doesn't matter how great you think it is. You've already liked too many books by white people. Snap to it! Choose something else to like, or you'll be falling behind on your quotas."

It's a rule that I note even you don't follow. Out of the eleven books that come up when your favorites are featured on your profile page, all of them are by white authors (David Allen, Bernhard Schlink, two by Shel Silverstein, Augusten Burroughs, John Irving, Janet Fitch, Edgar Allan Poe, William Shakespeare, Edmond Rostand, and J. K. Rowling). By contrast, the list of my top eleven favorite books features two books by writers of color (Erasure by Percival Everett and Labyrinths by Jorge Luis Borges), and I'm not even trying to meet some arbitrary quota for what I like best. If even you can't force your preferences to conform to a quota, then your comment is nothing but empty virtue signalling.

message 3975: by Coco Jane (new)

Coco Jane I honestly have never read Twilight, but my friend is reading it. I sometimes skim through pages of her book and read them and, truthfully, they are really well written. You can feel the pulse of each page and how Bella feels just through reading those few sentences. And, not to be mean, you probably haven't even read the books, so therefore you shouldn't have a say in how bad they are. Sure, the plot might not be the greatest, but don't judge things on what you hear. Most of those people you hear things haven't read the book either. They're just basing it off what others said or maybe the inside cover of the book. The point is, don't judge books by the cover. You don't actually know what magic they contain.

message 3976: by Bill (new)

Bill An interesting question is coming out of this discussion: should people only vote on books that they have completely read, start to finish? Or should any experience with a book -- even just being aware of its content -- make it a valid option for someone to vote for?

message 3977: by Norma (last edited Jun 08, 2017 07:35AM) (new)

Norma I believe you should only vote on books that you have read. I myself have read books that I have not finished, so that would make it very hard to give a complete opinion. For sure we will all pick books that we will never like or finish. Lets just enjoy the adventure of reading a good book.

message 3978: by Greg (new)

Greg Bill wrote: "An interesting question is coming out of this discussion: should people only vote on books that they have completely read, start to finish? Or should any experience with a book -- even just being a..."
Bill, what I find most interesting is people who give five star ratings to books and say, "It was sorta boring and I couldn't finish it but it's a classic." Or, five stars, "For the movie, not the book, as I don't like to read." Or, someone writes a review, posts it, and they instantly have 500+ likes that very minute. I assume it's followers from Facebook, and that's fine, but I've found, luckily, a group of about 50 or so people who actually read books and actually (YEA, shocking), give out ratings that aren't 5-stars. I've also noticed that people with very high overall ratings are the people most likely to receive free books in return for reviews. I shall write my congress person a very strong letter!

Greg Reading,Writing,Repeat wrote: "Kirsten wrote: "I'm annoyed with Twilight. Extremely

LOL...well, Twilight is rated higher and WAS better, so all is not lost. I wonder why Stephen King didn't sue the author of The Shack for plagiarism anyway. Probably because King didn't want to slum with writers that bad.

message 3980: by Pedro (new)

Pedro Assumpção This is depressive and decadent

message 3981: by John (new)

John Fisher I read mostly factual, useful, books, so this list is kind of pointless to me. There was nothing useful for me to vote on except books that I read years ago.

message 3982: by Serina (new)

Serina Okay, I love The Hunger Games, but it is NOT the best book ever written.

message 3983: by Samantha (new)

Samantha Magner How did the 5th Harry Potter book even end up on this list? The 1st one is SO much better. This list is VERY inaccurate.

message 3984: by [deleted user] (new)

Wait why would you put the Twillight book on there?????
*Shows confused look to world*

message 3985: by Marianne (new)

Marianne Evans How can I possibly vote for the best book ever? That's like saying reading is all over for me. Good bye.

message 3986: by Sandy (new)

Sandy King Right now, i'd just like to see my novel on a list! New to Goodreads and not quite sure what i am doing yet!

message 3987: by Sergio (new)

Sergio Mic Most "popular" books, must be the name of the list.

message 3990: by Sabina (new)

Sabina el jardín secreto

message 3991: by Nerijus (new)

Nerijus Twilight, Harry Potter, Hunger Games, Chronicles of Narnia at the top 10. These really are Best books EVER according to you? This is more sad, than funny, that people don't know anymore that is a good book.. This is more so like popular opinion of people who have only read Books like Harry Potter, Twilight etc.

message 3992: by Mary (Meesa) (new)

Mary (Meesa) I'm new to lists. Sounds like some people do not like them!

.•*¨*• ☼ marie ☼ .•*¨*• Mary (Meesa) wrote: "I'm new to lists. Sounds like some people do not like them!"

yeah, most of the people here are just crybabys who don't realize that opinions aren't truths
if you think anna karenina is the best book ever, thats fine, if you think it is harry potter, thats also fine, but you dont get to say what a trash book harry potter or anna karenina is just because you dont like it

message 3994: by Nerijus (new)

Nerijus I agree with you Mary. But once again I am saying what putting Anna Karenina on the same list close to each other it is just stupid. I am glad there are still people who read books. But so far, I have never had a intelligent converastion with Harry Poter fan. They just plainly don't see anything else and praise the only book they have read so much. I say, read more classics, more everything. Live life and get mature by getting hurt. Stand up and fight on. I am not saying it is utterless crap, but Harry will never teach you as much as Anna Kareninna or really any work by Dostojevsky.

message 3995: by Megan (new)

Megan Harry Potter. HUFFLEPUFF!!

message 3996: by Tyler (new)

Tyler Cameron Megan wrote: "Harry Potter. HUFFLEPUFF!!"

What??? Listen I love Harry Potter, don't get me wrong, but best books ever??? Have you read A Prayer for Owen Meany? The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy? Shoot, even The Book Thief is probably better than any one of the HPs... just saying. And then there's Animal Farm and/or 1984... the list goes on. Harry's great, but there are some AMAZING books out there that you need to try

message 3997: by Charles (new)

Charles Reid Cindy wrote: "Wow why are you all so angry??

It's not because "some of these are outside your genre" or whatever. Its because seriously.. 50 shades? Twilight? LITERALLY twilight reads like it was written by a 12 year old whos a little dyslexic. And that leaves out the stunningly ridiculously illogical 'plot' and characters who are both unpopular and sad and incredibly popular and happy. And 50 shades is just bdsm fan fiction. IF only literotica writers had known theyd all be billionaires

message 3999: by Alescar (new)

Alescar Amber wrote: "This list is a joke!"

What do you mean? it has a number of classics and good books. Just because you don't like some of them doesn't mean they don't deserve to be on this list.

message 4000: by Charles (new)

Charles Reid It's not "because you dont like some of these'. Some of these books shouldnt even be compared to pulp fiction. In an earlier age they wouldnt have even been published. But we have marketing experts and corporate salespeople choosing what gets published and what gets support now. Stephanie Meyer has the writing ability of a 4th grader. Its literally that bad. I could go on for hours about her writing alone.
