Kervin, and Hunger Games is a rip-off from a Japanese movie entitled "Battle Royale".!

Bella left Edward? Thanks so much, now I don't have to read anything in this series after the first one.

Fut the Whack? It's the EMO of literature! It's pop garbage with no depth! It's above inarguable classics like Crime and Punishment! That's like arguing that My Chemical Romance is better music than Bach! This place is bonkers!"

Don't get so frustrated over it. Contemporary youth is ignorant and easy to entertain.

Stephen Tora wrote: "...Don't get so frustrated over it. Contemporary youth is ignorant and easy to entertain."

Not sure that that's true. In many ways younger folks are WAY ahead of where we were at that age. (at least me) I think it's just that they have a greater visibility than youth used to have.

I recently saw a documentary on the UK in the 50's that sort of talked about the "invention" of teen-agers.

They made the point that teens were generally ignored as a group but that that started changing with the advent of the "bobbysoxers" of the 40's and the teens of the 50's and 60's. They attributed it mostly to teens becoming more affluent and marketing folks looking to cash-in on those "new markets."

I do agree that most youths lack the experience to really understand the viewpoints of others and haven't developed all the experiential wisdom that they will eventually be capable of... But that's promising, no?

Jia Yue I disagree with this list. But then again, I disagree with all the lists.

Oh well.

Jenna Greg wrote: "Wow, some of these folks need to read more. Or age more. Or go to school, or something. I mean, really."

Greg, well, I do agree with you, but age is not necessarily maturity. But yeah, the Book Fairy should visit them. Okay, fine. The Book of Mormon is on the list because to lots of Mormons it is important. Personally, I wish everyone was a Christian, but nobody will listen to me and I would lose all of my friends because I'm too bossy or not respecting religious beliefs. So I just am like, well, fine, you're Hindu? Great. Anyhoo, does anyone know why Twilight is so great? It is not. Maybe a good oh ha, this is so bad it's funny, but the best book ever?

Jenna Richard wrote: "Only in the USA would "the most popular" be confused for "the best". How many people have read Philip Roth's "Portnoy's Complaint" about masturbation? Compare that to how many people have read Thor..."

No, the list says at the top, Best Books, so yeah.

message 3860: by Cici (new)

Cici There are so many people complaining about the book of Mormon, but my major problem is "A Wrinkle in Time" being at #38. Out of every book I have ever read, that remains my most hated.

Jenna Ciara wrote: "There are so many people complaining about the book of Mormon, but my major problem is "A Wrinkle in Time" being at #38. Out of every book I have ever read, that remains my most hated."
Why do you hate a Wrinkle in Time? Personally, I liked it. The rest of the series was bleh, but the first book was good.

message 3862: by The Dude (new)

The Dude The hunger Games is the pinnacle of literature, I always suspected this.

Perhaps it's because I didn't read it as a child, but the entire thing just failed for me. The synopsis made me see a lot of potential and it was fine at the beginning but went downhill fast.

For one thing, the characters quickly began to annoy the hell out of me. Meg was in a constant state of hysteria, getting in a flap with everyone over everything, and Charles Wallace was supposed to be 'special' but we're never told why. All they did was put an irritable old man in a 4-year-olds body. As for Calvin and the witches, I found them totally bland.

I was excited with the idea of them travelling throughout the universe but there was virtually no world-building. There was no imagination in terms of descriptions or development of the planets.

It takes a lot of tedious dialogue to get to the point where we're told this is a battle against evil, and all you need is love. The End. The villain is reduced to IT, a generic evil force. The whole thing felt so lackluster, there was no detail or emotion and not much plot to speak of. There were also religious references that came out of nowhere and then just disappeared. It sort of read like there were bits missing from the book, because none of the ideas were really expanded on.

The only part that I found interesting was the idea of Camazotz and IT striving to create a conformist type of society. But that kind of got swallowed up by all the problems I had with the book overall.

I feel a bit guilty shitting all over this book on a public forum because that's something I've never done before, but I just found it so terrible. Hoping I don't offend anyone, these are all just my opinions of course.

I also had a disappointed reaction to that book. Perhaps not as bad as yours but with all the hype I'd hoped for more. I hop you also wrote a review that you attached to the book directly.

Laugh, Cry and be INSPIRED by this amazing little hero

message 3866: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Is The Hunger Games really better than The Great Gatsby? I've read Gatsby but not Hunger. I can't imagine the writing is better. I've never seen an author with a greater command of the English language than F. Scott Fitzgerald. Oh well, lists are just a collection of people's personal tastes. I guess there is no way to truly quantify what makes one book better than another.

message 3867: by Chris (new)

Chris Why the FUCK is Twilight on here. 'Best Books Ever,' my ass.

Battle Royal was a book before it was a movie... pretty good one too.

message 3869: by Stephen (new)

Stephen Gravity's Rainbow by Thomas Pynchon I'm truly dismayed that this book didn't make the list . . . although I do hear that GR has become like a less visited monument, but still . . .

message 3870: by Richard (new)

Richard Bentley This list is really silly. 75% of these books will be pretty much unknown and unloved in 50 years. Hardly classic material.

I agree, she is amazing, probably they forced to read it at school.

message 3880: by A.F. (new)

A.F. Rose Why is there not one Neil Gaiman book on this list!??

message 3881: by EpicSpiritWolf (new)

EpicSpiritWolf The list is not good. Most of the super good books have been left off. For example The Mark of the Dragonfly, Fish in a Tree, Fuzzy mud, Courage & Defiance, Legend of the Ghost Dog, Racial Unity, etc. BTW I am writing a book and when it comes out i hope it doesn't end up on this list.

message 3882: by EpicSpiritWolf (new)

EpicSpiritWolf What is "The Book of the Mormon"? I have never heard of it.

Thomas Marla wrote: "this is the second list--worst books was the first--and i'm done. this is madness. i mean, how many mormons congregated to vote the book of mormon as a top 100 book? really?"

To many people, The Book Of Mormon is the Best, most important book ever.

Tanz the Fluorescent Adolescent How did the 5th Harry Potter book rank higher than the 1st book and the last book??? It doesn't make sense!!!
Also, I love the Hunger Games and believe that it's an instant classic but I don't think that it should have been voted higher than Pride and Prejudice. I genuinely think, because of this, that a large majority of the voters on this list were teenagers who have not read any classics.

message 3885: by Daniel (new)

Daniel Kabongu i think my reason has never changed by i wanna stay everytimes on goodreads because i like goodreads and i wanna be connected each times

message 3886: by Isabela (new)

And where is little women???

message 3891: by Aurelia (new)

Aurelia B why order of the phoenix instead of harry potter and the goblet of fire?

message 3892: by Liam (new)

Liam Why do people just complain? Lol. I mean, obviously it's up there because some number of people voted that it was one of the best. It's up there because people want it to. THE CONSPIRACY!

message 3893: by Rob (new)

Rob Stretch This is the worst list of books ever.

message 3894: by Greg (new)

Greg I'm fine with this list if the title is changed to: Favorite Books Ever. That makes perfect sense. "Best Books Ever", with "Hunger Games" at the top spot reminds me of why I don't care much for social media.

I'm amused by the warning at the top of this list: "Note to librarians: do not edit this list's description." Clearly I am not the only librarian in the world who would love to go in and note that this is in no way a representation of what it claims to be.

message 3896: by [deleted user] (new)

Hunger Games ... seriously? S E R I O U S L Y ?

Im not saying it's a bad book. But the best book of all time ... dont make me laugh.

Bill, I didn't even see that note. What's so odd about "Hunger Games" is it is the exact same story from the Japanese film, "Battle Royale" from about ten years ago. And even the endings (two people survive) are the same! But I digress. Congrats on you being a librarian, what a great job for a book lover!

Probably because some people say it was the best of all the HP movies.

message 3899: by Jason (new)

Jason Harris From the selections, the list should have been called "The best books, like, ever..."
