By your statement, every first prize is just an opinion.

Purpose of course. The lady should just change his name already from 'in' to 'ine'!"
I second that motion.

4th place for Twilight is a joke, bad one too."
That is your opinion, not a joke. Please respect the vote of the community.

Great list:) Can you please add Throne of Glass series?"
Twilight is on this list because some people happen to love it.

It does not suck, that is an opinion. An opinion is also me saying it does not suck. They are opinions, yes, but not facts. Many people, I believe, are being rude when they say a book sucks or shouldn't be on this list. People put in a lot of effort to write these books, we should respect their work.

You can love a book, but it doesn't make it a good book. I like a lot of books, because they are easy to read etc. but i know that it doesn't make it good.

You are right on that. I guess a book cannot be good or bad, it is different for every person who reads it. All we can do is look at the ratings and listen to what people say about that particular book, depending if we read it or not. A book will be good to some people and bad to others. I'm saying the authors put a lot of thought into what they write. Twilight, for example, is a best seller, so that would lead me to think it is a good book. Good is my opinion, but it is also the opinion of other people as well. It is also the complete opposite of other people. We all have our own definitions of good. Good can be an easy read, lovable characters, witty conversations, plot twists you never saw coming, etc. We all have our opinion and "good" or "bad" tend to be words we use when describing(sp) something. Well, we use it in our reviews, just with different words that means essentially (sp) the same thing. I love many books as well, my friends who read the book agree it was a good book, to us. I also have friends who read the same book and didn't like it. We have our different opinions about that book. You can say it may be a good book because it averaged out to pretty good ratings or if it earned an award. A book may not catch your interest but it may have caught the interest of readers of different genres. It will not be a good book to everybody, but it will be to some.

It's just the same conversation about Twilight over and over again for nearly 80 pages

Well, it wouldn't have to be if people could just agree that we all have our own tastes in books.

LOL!
LOL!

What I'm trying to say is that we can do what we want, but we must keep in mind the thoughts of others as well.

This is average vote by the community. I see it fits as a lot of people voted their believed best. Lists are opinions as to what we believe book wise.

First prize is usually given to what judges believe is the best. So yes, first prize is given to the best by the judges' opinions.

So by your statement, a runner doesn't get a first prize because he touches the line first but he gets it by judges' opinions. Cool!

There are different kinds of competitions. I was talking about a different one than you. In a race, the one who crosses first wins but books can't exactly run. There is no best, we do have our opinions as to what is best but what we may think is fact because so many people may have agreed is actually opinion that is shared by many. There is also a slight difference between winner and best. Winner is fact, best can be fact if by contest means, but it is most likely opinion in other cases. It is the best most likely because judges thought it was the best. For example, best dressed, best science fair project, etc. Do you see what I'm saying?

seriously, jane austen? errughhh."
I don't know Jane Austen. But I agree truth is not democratic.
Twilight is better than Narnia? THAT'S SAD!

P.S. to all the idiots who think their 'opinion' is equally valid - it isn't. If your only defense for picking a crap book is a self-righteous bleat about your rights and entitlements and the equality of all people's views, then you are sure in for a shock when you leave kindergarten.

Yah."
Twilight is in stage 3 of overhyped books.
Stage 1: start of the fancraze, only lovers.
Stage 2: start of the mass-hate, only haters.
Stage 3: return of the Twihards to defend their fandom, war with heavy casualties and utter and complete chaos.
Stage 4: death of the fandom because fans have reached adulthood, except for some old people in basements waiting for the remake of the movies.
We're almost there.

You know what's even sadder? This list has 79 (!) pages of comments about how this list has no value whatsoever. Am I the only person who finds this incredibly ironic? That's like eating a banana and saying, "Wow, this thing tastes so disgusting I'm not even going to eat it."

To vote on this one should have to have read at least 100 classics, in addition to several hundred books from other genres. How can someone that has read only Young Adult books truly judge in such a competition?

1. Have you even read Young Adult books?
2. Why do people always pretend classics are better than contemporary books? Do you suppose we lost brain cells over the centuries? I think Young Adult can also contain valuable information.
3. 'Best' is a subjective term. We all have our favorite books and genres. So that would mean no one can vote on this list.

Very nicely stated Emma, I have to agree. Just because one likes or doesn't like a book doesn't mean others will or wont. It's the beauty of what a story brings to the individual/s reading it.

So clearly we can go round and round in circles on this one. Everyone is right, no-one is wrong and we can all settle into our respective safe spaces with a cup of hot chocolate, a teddy bear and a nice book, secure in our right to have an opinion and the correctness of that opinion.
If you subscribe to that view then next time you need a wisdom tooth extracted, show me the courage of your convictions and get a janitor to extract it. After all, his opinion on dental surgery is equally valid right? Well bollocks to that.

As for a "recognized scale of literary standard," maybe one of the more specific lists will better suit your search. (I doubt it will be broadly recognized, though; this list shows the books with the broadest recognition, for what that's worth.)

That, too.
But on this site, it might and most probably has to do with the very scale of rating, as well. Users seem to award an..."
Dodo, you are so right. A three-star rating is a good rating, it means we liked it!

Andrea, okay, you're now a freshman in college, at least 18. So let's do this. Since Hunger Games is only a retelling of the "Battle Royale" film from Japan, and since I've read several Potter books and found them okay, I'll read "Twilight" if you will read Anne Rice's "Interview With The Vampire" or her "Prince Lestat" from last year. Then we will compare. Deal? Just for the fun of it. I've not read any of the Twilight books, so it's really not fair for me to say it shouldn't be in the top ten.

Perfect analogy.

Twilight since third grade? Thanks for that tidbit of information. Now we know where you are coming from.

Randy, yep, imagine, 9-10 year old readers listed Twilight as a favorite. It would be interesting if goodreads could factor in something like # of books read. So, for example, if one votes "Rabbit Run" as a favorite, and one has read 500 books, then "Rabbit Run" would get 500 votes automatically. I think this list would look a lot different if goodreads were to do this, and would certainly lend credibility to the list.

Then you don't have to look at this list again, if it bothers you so much. It won't affect anybody if you choose to ignore this list. But please, do what you think is best.

The technical term is 'fangirls.'

And, like "fanboys", nothing wrong at all with these terms.

Well, you could let the geniuses run everything. Or, let the mentally challenged run everything. I don't think there would be much difference. I think the people who think they are geniuses and refuse to acknowledge they aren't are the most dangerous. Especially with voting rights.
