Kyndall Harrell I feel like you guys are making a bigger deal out of a list of the "best" books ever than it is, tbh. :*

Thoughtdome225 I commented on this list, and now it tells me whenever there is a new comment. Be warned.

You can avoid that by unchecking "Notify me when people reply" (or clicking on the "edit" link next to it if it says "enabled") when you leave a comment.

Thx for spotting it!

Would you like to notify the GR Librarians group:

https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/...

I'm not sure if the votes for the two duplicates can be merged. (And I'd rather NOT delete anything on this list, after the damage it suffered recently.)

marissa Teresa wrote: "Twilight and The Very Hungry Caterpillar? Really?"

theres nothing wrong with twilight. and this not just for you. the very hungry caterpillar is considered a work of art. just its not like for anyone above 6. get a brain stupid.

message 3508: by Andrew (last edited Oct 14, 2014 02:52PM) (new)

Andrew Obrigewitsch Well The Very Hungry Caterpillar does have a feeling of quality to it that modern YA books lack, and I rank it far above Twilight and the Hunger Games.

message 3509: by Andrew (last edited Oct 13, 2014 03:45PM) (new)

Andrew Obrigewitsch Wuthering Heights is on here twice, at 43 and 52.

I don't understand your comment (genuinely). Do you mean that truth should be democratic, which seems not to make sense? Or that it is - or what?

I don't see how one could expect any link between truth and democracy, they're entirely different domains.

message 3512: by Tim (new)

Tim Is this list searchable, and if so how? Thanks!

message 3513: by Tim (new)

Tim And how do I get the comments list ordered by "newest first"? At the moment it's "oldest first" and clicking "newest" does nothing.

message 3514: by Nancy (new)

Nancy Thormann There are no books by Robert van Gulik on the list

message 3515: by Nancy (new)

Nancy Thormann Robert van Gulik He wrote the Judge Dee murder mysteries.

My teacher said idiots don't like jane austin haha, most people just think she was racist but if you analyzed it beneath the surface then yuo'd understand she was making fun of the society she was living in

And don't forget Shades of Grey, and all the vampire and zombie books out there. I wonder why people who think they are sophisticated and use the latest technology think schlock like this is great. Being slaved to a cell phone or
mobile computer affects one's critical acumen.

Um... might (or might not, again) have to do with this...

I catch myself downrating "compulsory" books, meaning those I had to read to pass an exam or something. Those mentioned by Santiago and Henry included (bar, of course, Huckleberry Finn which I like no matter what, and even more so because some ***** would ban the book), not to mention Plato and Shakespeare and many others. Me a readaholic and all, I still do not like being told what I must read. Never have.

Couldn`t it be there are others like me?

:D

message 3523: by Nancy (new)

Nancy Thormann I agree with you Dodo. There are so many books to choose from for so many different countries. It seems to me this list is geared towards American and British books. Maybe we should start our own list of 100.

Jasmine Why is the hunger games before the fault in our stars?!!?!?!!?!,!?!?!?!?!?!?!
That's just wrong sure the hunger games is a good book but that is way wrong.

Sorry I am not meaning to be rude it's just my opinion and I respect everyone else's.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think that anybody is going against anybody else's opinions, and I am sure nobody is trying to be rude, but forgive me if I'm wrong. :)

So great and my 5 th favorite book!

message 3527: by Sherry (last edited Nov 17, 2014 06:44AM) (new)

Sherry Twilight is a very poor example of good literature! Should not even be included with other classics! Preteen fluff about vampire beauty!

Erin Sherry wrote: "Twilight is a very poor example of good literature! Should not even be included with other classics! Preteen fluff about vampire beauty!"

ahh....I'm no Twilight fan, but I can honestly say that those books are definitely not aimed at preteens.

message 3529: by [deleted user] (new)

Yup I agree

message 3530: by Dagitab (new)

Dagitab Lacsamana The only thing I genuinely like about this list is that The Perks is here. =)

No Haruki? Not even one. =( haha.
And what the ever loving fuuu? The Notebook? siriusly?? hahaha

message 3531: by Jake (new)

Jake Thornhill I don't think it matters where books are in the 'Public's Top 100' list.

Make your own top 100 and then you may just change something.

message 3532: by Dodo (new)

Dodo Jake wrote: "Make your own top 100 and then you may just change something."

message 3534: by Alexandra (new)

Alexandra I absolutely LOVE 'The Night Circus' Have you read any other books that quite compare? I can not find any close at all.

message 3535: by Julian (new)

Julian Meynell I don't know if anyone cares, but at some point in the last couple of months, someone went through and deleted six of the seven Harry Potters, the Iliad, 1984, Hamlet and God knows what else from this list cancelling all those votes.

These books are starting to climb again, but at least a dozen books in the top 100 were removed.

message 3536: by [deleted user] (new)

Wow... Weird!!

message 3537: by Mel (new)

Mel Foster Thanks Julian. Anyone deleting books please have the courtesy to leave a comment explaining why. Anything less is juvenile, petty, and punishable.

message 3538: by Kalin (new)

Kalin At some point, a GR librarian arbitrarily introduced a rule that only one book per author can be on the list.

Another librarian apparently thought the rule was universally accepted and deleted some of the "redundant" books.

When we saw what had happened, we warned the super-librarians and they introduced the "do not edit this list's description" caveat.

However, there seems to be no way to undo those deletions. Yes, it was bad. :(

yes, there's nothing wrong in adding twilight in the list.......

message 3542: by Mel (new)

Mel Foster The other thing to note when voting on this list is that earlier this year the description was edited to "fiction only" and all nonfiction was removed on someone's whim. That has been reverted, so vote for what you think is the "best" in whatever genre.

The Hunger Games is the best book ever? Followed by Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, arguably the worst book in a fairly mediocre series overall? And Twilight is coming up close behind, at number four? Yeah … Not even going to bother here. Moving on.

message 3549: by Bill (new)

Bill Nikayla wrote: "Why the heck is Frankenstein on here....."

Probably because it's a landmark in literature (it's considered by many as the first ever science fiction novel), a classic, and just purely and simply a badass f...ing great book?

message 3550: by Kalin (new)

Kalin Or simply because a lot of people voted for it. ;)
