André Well, rather its position up there is a joke. Mormons were clearly overrepresented in the voting, which makes it absolutely non-representive. Other books, like the Qur'ân or the Daodejing or the Torah, which have equal value as the Bible or the Book of Mormon, are not included.

I understand your position. I agree, other religious books are just as influential and should be included on the list. I think there are a lot of Mormons on this site, which may have swayed the vote, but the Book of Mormon a very influential book-- which would make it deserving of being near the top of the list.

message 203: by André (new)

André I would rather exclude all religious books from such a list, as they cannot be compared in my opinion with fictional books (it's of course debatable whether those books are fictional too, but you know what I mean). But I agree that religious books should be treated alike.

I agree actually

Quentin I guess you've read 'em all James so you're in a position to judge, huh??? I think casting aspersions on books you haven't read is rediculous. But that's just my opinion -- and you know what they say about opinions.

message 206: by Bry (last edited Apr 03, 2009 10:21AM) (new)

Bry A problem with lists such as this is it does not define what "Best Books Ever" entails. Does it mean most influential in history? Does it mean the most enjoyable to read? What about how fulfilling? Or can it mean the most influential to an individual? I decided to look at it from the perspective of most influential historically. I rated Pride and Prejudice low in the books I have read; however, I included it as a "Best Book Ever" because of the contribution it has given to society as a whole.

So, relax everyone. Just because people don't see life from your perspective doesn't mean they are wrong.

message 207: by Ariel (new)

Ariel why are people so surprised to see the book of mormon on this list? every mormon on goodreads would vote it as the best book ever. apparently there is a significant number of mormons on goodreads.

message 208: by Michael (new)

Michael The reason for the complaints about the Book of Mormon is because it appears to be an obvious set up at proseltyzing. It would be nice to keep this website free of that. Also many of the recent books added such as the Harry Potter and Twilight series are a bit much. Seems like books that have stood the test of time are the kind that should be listed as the best. Sorry, I'm a purist.

Sorry Sir, there is no proselyting set-up here.
People are genuinely captivated by the book and wanted to express such. No one need be offended. It is okay if you disagree with its position, that is fine. You are free to create your own list where religious books are omitted.

message 210: by André (new)

André But where's the margin?

message 211: by Stephanie K (new)

Stephanie K

very true

message 212: by Michelle (new)

Michelle I'm not that much of a reader, so I don't think its fair if I voted. But, right now, I prefer Twilight. But, yeah, extreme twilight fans irritate me. It's sort of annoying.

I think that people should respect my oppinion.

message 213: by Nahid (last edited Apr 06, 2009 03:53PM) (new)

Nahid Daryani I don`t the writer of these book and haven`t read them. please whos the author of mormon and twilight. then I can say my oppinion. Michelle you are right and I respect your oppinion.

message 214: by Katie (new)

Katie Wiechmann The book of Mormon? For real? I live in Utah and avoid that thing at all costs.

message 216: by Aguskarsayudha (new)

Aguskarsayudha I just wanna say i don't know what is the problem because i never read the book before

message 217: by Aguskarsayudha (new)

Aguskarsayudha Banyak memang buku yang ada, tapi bagi saya hanya buku buku yang menarik untuk dibaca saja yang dibaca termasuk salah satu buku diatas

Thanks for quoting the 8th artical of faith. Good Job!

message 219: by Carla (new)

Carla only using this list cause I have lousy recall and its a way to get some of the books I've read on my page. The rankings don't make any sense to me. Was really surprised to see Borges there though.

message 220: by Ademption (new)

Ademption I am glad the Book of Mormon is number #2 on the list. At least it is higher than the Bible, the Koran, the Diamond Sutra and all those heretical texts. Though if Dianetics could beat it to the #1 spot, I think all would be right with the world.

message 221: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine Fire-fish wrote: "May be there should be a list of "Books for Mormones" on this website.. "

Or maybe a list for people who can't spell Mormons...? ;P

message 222: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine Kirsten wrote: "I'm annoyed with Twilight. Extremely

And where is The Shack?"

Twilight has been an extravagant and over-rated waste of time, money, paper, and film.

message 223: by Deanna (new)

Deanna Smith i haven't gotten a chance to look through this thing, it would take FOREVER, but is tuesdays with morrie on here? if not, it SHOULD be. i don't care if he's a sports writing, mitch album's book is FANTASTIC.

message 224: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Marla wrote: "this is the second list--worst books was the first--and i'm done. this is madness. i mean, how many mormons congregated to vote the book of mormon as a top 100 book? really?"

I read it as a work of literature. The values and stories presented in it are complex and interesting, regardless of whether you believe that the Native Americans are "Lamanites".

message 225: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Leslie wrote: "Twilight is number 4? Give me a friggin break people!!! Entertaining? Slightly. A classic piece of literature? Absolutely not! "

No kidding. A book like Twilight may be interesting to the teenage girls who think stalking is okay as long as it's by Edward, but the fact remains that Twilight can never be one of the greatest books of all time. It's sad to see that book far higher on the list than timeless classics. In twenty years, are people still going to be fascinated with Twilight? Probably not.

message 226: by [deleted user] (last edited Apr 20, 2009 06:50PM) (new)

I havn't read Twilight yet, I watched the movie but all of my friends screamed whenever Edward was on so I didn't hear it at all! Someone go to my profile and explain it to me! Please!

Karina Great book

DB So many people have terrible taste.

Diane Mannone Greg wrote: "Wow, some of these folks need to read more. Or age more. Or go to school, or something. I mean, really."

You said it! This list is embarrassing!

message 232: by Martha (new)

Martha Well, to the person who posted recently ... I really like Jane Austen, but I like most things that are British. Seriously, though ... Twilight as a Best Book Ever??? I liked the book & will read the others in the series, but I don't consider it one of the best books ever. I know, I know ... some will consider that sacrilege.

message 233: by Candace (new)

Candace Twilight surprises me...

Jo Fire-fish wrote: "May be there should be a list of "Books for Mormones" on this website.. " Or MoreMoans tee hee

message 235: by Rachel (new)

Rachel I can understand people liking Twilight, but the fanaticism has gotten out of control. I'm extremely annoyed with the amount of publicity and I'm really sick of the screaming teenage girls. Stephanie Meyer just got lucky. She's not even a very good writer.

message 236: by shyla (new)

shyla I can't believe that there were no Toni Morrison books listed by the end of the second page at least. Nuts!

message 237: by Martha (new)

Martha I agree with Rachel ... Twilight is entertaining, but the writing could be better. The Sookie Stackhouse books are much better ... just don't have the fanatical teenage girls following that series.

message 238: by Sydney (new)

Sydney Twilight is the worst book ever written. I am through with it.

message 239: by Ilana (new)

Ilana twilight is so overrated. come on.

message 240: by Carter (new)

Carter Jami wrote: "as of this comment, mormons are over-represented by more than three-fold, demographically. either some of the voters here are cheaters (boo!) or mormons are disproportionately the sort of big read..."

You can blame us for Twilight as well. And yes we are disproportionately big readers, I'd say we're kind of raised that way. What pisses me off is that the everyone who voted for the Book of Mormon should have voted for the Bible as well. Ungrateful Mormons.

message 241: by Carter (new)

Carter Also, i would like to note that the Bible and Book of Mormon have the same "Author" interesting.

message 242: by Joshua (new)

Joshua Marla wrote: "this is the second list--worst books was the first--and i'm done. this is madness. i mean, how many mormons congregated to vote the book of mormon as a top 100 book? really?"

1678 apparently...

message 243: by Garrett (last edited May 03, 2009 08:57AM) (new)

Garrett This list is a serious failure. The day the Twilight trend is completely out of memory will be a happy day.

message 244: by Sums (new)

Thank you! The Book of Mormon is educational and entertaining. I don't thinkthat it gets better than that. You are entitled to you'r oppinion, and mine is that you HAVE TO read something before you judge it especially if you'r going to criticize it. I have read Twilight and that is extremely well written as well.

message 246: by Sums (new)

Sums What the flip did you say??
Thank you for understanding my
opinion!

It wasn't well written at all! Meyer's writing is repetitive and technically flawed.

message 248: by Martha (new)

Martha I agree that it was repetitive ... boringly so. Hard to get through. Perhaps some need that repetition, but after the 20th time of a main character saying the same thing ... well, you get the drift ... to each his own. I'm glad that Ms. Meyer is so successful, but I don't think the book is a "best ever"! But then that's my opinion & I agree that everyone is entitled to their own.

message 249: by Ben (new)

Ben Hickling Que? what? please insert your own expression of disbelief, I am genuinely astounded by this list.

The book of Mormon, twilight and Jane Austen in the top 5!

*Places head in hands*

My faith in humankind is irreparably damaged.

message 250: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Elizabeth wrote: "If you're groaning or confused about The Book of Mormon being at #1, I ask - have you ever read it? It's a fair question... I do agree w/the Twilight comment though - UGH. But hellooo, Farenheit ..."

I totally agree with Elizabeth. Farenheit 451 should be way higher on the list!
