Gerson Bedoya I though this was a serious list

message 2302: by Nawang (new)

Nawang Twlight? I do not agree!

message 2303: by Curtis (new)

Curtis Twilight #1? Seriously? I think I just threw up a little..

message 2304: by L'Poni (new)

L'Poni The reason HP and Twilight dominate is because they are POPULAR (news-wise). The media talked about them so much that everyone knows about them, and they are chidlren's books. Kiddie books seem to rank up higher because there are a lot of kiddies in the world. I've never read Twilight or HP. I can't get through novels, but I did read HP #7.

message 2305: by Jayden (new)

Jayden Excuse me, but is that Twilight at the damned top?

message 2306: by James (new)

James Absolutely, The Book Of Mormon, for no other book exposes how folks will believe exactly what they want to, so starkly... What says more about the American psyche than the belief so many have in the "revelations" of a known, convicted huckster!

message 2307: by Alisha (new)

Alisha I am definitely rooting for Catching Fire. I finished it in one day.

message 2308: by Susan (new)

Susan Parsons New book by a new author! Baden-Powell's Beads. If you are looking for a new book and willing to give a new author a try...read this...you won't be sorry. He has 3 more written just waiting for this book to go viral! Let me know what you think!

message 2309: by Lilcute (new)

Lilcute wow this is good for your time

message 2310: by Bill (new)

Bill Stanford There are many books on this list that I have read, but I hated them for a very wide range of reasons.
But, I found no way to make this public.

message 2311: by Hafsa (new)

Hafsa i extremely loath the entire Twilight Saga, but i do like Alice as she's nice.I've read a couple of these books, the Harry Potter series are fantastic,Rebecca is mind-blowing,books written by Charles Dickens and Jane Austen are fascinating and each teaches us a valuable lesson. As for Becca's comment on the Holy Quran and Bibal,i agree that as religion is a personal subject, people shouldn't fight over it and respect each other's opinions and beliefs.

message 2312: by K.C. (new)

K.C. No book from Naipaul. This list is incomplete. My book should have been there too.

message 2313: by Joey (new)

Joey I lost faith a little after reading this.

message 2314: by Stella (new)

Stella This list is one of the worst lists u could ever think of

message 2315: by Bill (new)

Bill Stanford Might be interesting to see a list of the worst books ever read aor should I say written?

message 2316: by Sarah (new)

Sarah hey i read almost all these books and ive read almost all books. they are pretty good but there are better

message 2317: by Kristin (new)

Kristin Wow.. The fact that Twilight is number one is a very sad, sad thing.

message 2318: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Krisitn wrote: "Wow.. The fact that Twilight is number one is a very sad, sad thing."

yep i agree with you on that one

message 2319: by br3ni3acb0y (new)

br3ni3acb0y This list seems pretty biased in my perspective.

message 2320: by Jacob (new)

Jacob When you say that all of the best books on this list are also on the worst list. All but one, the Book of Mormon isnt on the worst list and if you want to find out why just read it.

message 2321: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) Actually it is. Not being hard to get along with but it is over there as is the Bible and about every other book that says anything. These lists are more "books I like" and "books I don't like".

message 2322: by Jacob (new)

Jacob Exactly, you should read books before you rate them.

message 2323: by Pt (new)

Pt It hurts to see twilight on top.. above harry potter.
It just shows the kind of people who join this community. ( Not meant to hurt anyone but agreement among general population is that HP is incomparable with twilight and only in Goodreads you see a different viewpoint)

message 2324: by Jonathan (last edited Apr 27, 2012 09:59AM) (new)

Jonathan Wijaya Oh, come on.

All members have the right to choose. This is just a list. I don't mind seeing some books that I don't think deserve to be in top 10, but what can I do ? Protest against the result ? It's useless.

The point is, we see tendency of average read books among members here, and that's good. What would be better to know that 10,000 people read so many books (even if you personally don't like the books) so that the reading habit should grow up and they will finally understand which books to read in the future ? It is the best feeling I get

You all say you love reading good books, why can't you spread that love to other people ? Even they are 12-18 yrs old, let them start read something and enjoy it. And hopefully they will love reading, any books.

And last but not least, if you love reading books, this list means nothing but to remind you how many (good) books you missed or should be on your "to read" list.

Just my 0.02

" to remind you how many (good) books you missed ..."
That's why I joined this site anyway.. to find new books. Well, you're right about a lot of things ( for instance - cultivation of reading habit in 12-18 years old) and it IS heart warming to see 100,000+ people rating a book in an online book club.
But My English teacher from school always used to tell me that it is just not enough to read books once you become an habitual reader, it is also necessary that you read the right books.. That's always the next step when you become a reader .. Discovering the real good ones..
I'm not saying Harry Potter is a genius piece of literature but a 12 year old could start with Harry Potter rather than twilight for a lot of reasons.
That's what I did .From a person whose first language is not English, I think very highly of the quality of english used in HP books. I can tell you that it's loads better than a colloquial spoken english used in New-gen teen romances like Twilight.
Believe me, I could hardly construct a sentence in English when I was 11 years old when I started off with HP books. It was just the right start that I needed and my marks in English improved tremendously after that and gave me an advantage over my peers.

message 2326: by Jonathan (last edited Apr 27, 2012 11:25AM) (new)

Jonathan Wijaya Dear Muthulx,

Let's hope, the culture of reading will be preserved. We should show the younger generation what to read, and choose after they started to enjoy reading. Show them the way, and let them become new book lovers. Don't force them what we like to read. Give them choices to explore. Let them have their own imaginations & dreams. In that way, they will develop further. And we really hope many new talents will grow, may be as a new talented writers or reviewers, all born from reading good books.

"Believe me, I could hardly construct a sentence in English when I was 11 years old when I started off with HP books. It was just the right start that I needed and my marks in English improved tremendously after that and gave me an advantage over my peers. "

As you wrote yourself, not HP, not Twilight nor Pride and Prejudice nor Tale of two cities will start your development. It is you yourself who start :)

Amedeo Josef wrote: "Matt wrote: "The War of the Worlds"

My nine year old nephew just finished that book! I'm so proud."

This list has no credibility whatsoever. The fact that "Twilight" is number one is embarrassing. It shows a lack of education, intelligence, and taste.

message 2328: by Zoe (new)

Zoe Whoever put Twilight at the top of this list has obviously never read any other books in their life!
I admit it's an alright book despite the lack of originality and pathetic love triangle. Not to mention the terrible films! But why is it down as one of the 'best books' ever written? Just because it managed to grasp the attention of a lot of twelve year olds and managed to get movie rights. Ughh my faith in humanity is gone!

message 2329: by Tracey (new)

Tracey God, simmer. You all are making way to big a deal out of this list. I think there are quite a few good books on here. Why so hostile? The topic is reading. Thats relaxing..so calm down...and read a good book. hahahaha.
geez. funny..yes..like a clown.

message 2330: by Stephenlouis (new)

Stephenlouis This list reminds me of a fast-food restaurant.

message 2331: by Corey (new)

Corey Bertelsen HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Wait, this isn't a joke?

... HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA THAT'S EVEN FUNNIER!

message 2332: by [deleted user] (new)

Twilight at number one. Seriously?

message 2333: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Wijaya Muthulx wrote: "Ok.. Logically, you're right about what is right and what is not. You've more of an independent philosophy towards living and reading. But I'm not the only one of the opinion that Twilight should not be in top.."

I accept that as a compliment.

About that Twilight...

I can only say :
"People always agree to disagree"

I personally choose to move on and keep reading good books.

Best regards,
Jonathan

PS : yes, you're not the only one :)

message 2334: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Zr. I can't believe poor litterature made the list . Twilight ? Really ? If you're an avid reader you would know it had nothing special, the saga is well written, but it's not near 'the best book ever' .

message 2335: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Zr. Greg wrote: "Wow, some of these folks need to read more. Or age more. Or go to school, or something. I mean, really."

Couldn't agree more .

message 2336: by Katalin (new)

Katalin Seriously... Nicolas Sparks... yes...or Twilight? This is supposed to be best book EVER!!!!

message 2337: by Katalin (new)

Katalin Greg wrote: "Wow, some of these folks need to read more. Or age more. Or go to school, or something. I mean, really."

LOL!! WORDS FROM MY MOUTH!!!!

message 2338: by Katalin (new)

Katalin Becca wrote: "I agree. I think every fair-minded reader here will agree that you have to actually read something before deciding on its merit. And no one would argue with someone esteeming The Bible or The Quran..."

Because we do not put up encyclopedias and cook books on list like Best Book Ever! It's like every empty headed blonde with fake boobs and questionable morales put up on FB that their favorite book is The Bible!! It just makes me raving mad! First of all, I bet they have never read the whole thing, second, it is probably the only book they ever opened, plus they heard it on Sunday at church it is the best book ever! Pleeeeeeease!!!!! Sorry about all smart blondes with fake boobs! I don't have a problem with them! SOmeone was right! some folks just need to read more, or go to school or get educated or something!

message 2339: by Katalin (new)

Katalin Marla wrote: "this is the second list--worst books was the first--and i'm done. this is madness. i mean, how many mormons congregated to vote the book of mormon as a top 100 book? really?"

lol!!!!

message 2340: by Sarah (last edited May 07, 2012 08:41AM) (new)

Sarah Okay, I like Twilight. It's not bad. But what makes me want to rip all of my hair of, strand by strand, is the fact that Twilight is first and Looking for Alaska isn't even in the first 200.

message 2341: by Zach (new)

Zach Why don't we all agree that the majority of the people who commented hate Twilight and wish it was on the end of the list. So Twilight would not be on the list if all the smart people made a list containing best books ever that is actually considered literature.

message 2342: by Debbie (new)

Debbie I have to stop voting! I suddenly realized, they are ALL my favorite books, for one reason or another. They all have a redeeming factor, that makes each one the best. As for the ones I haven't read, I'm sure they would all be my favorites to. I suppose I have to catagorize them like this, The one that scared me the most.. Stephen Kings The Stand. The one that made me cry, The Miracle Worker. The one that made me laugh the most, ALL the Piers Anthony Xanthe series. And all the rest of the books are my favorites for giving the perfect escapes from a busy mundane life. Thanks to all the Authors, your all my favorites.

message 2343: by Lakin (new)

Lakin Twilight is number one on the list.

I don't want to live on this planet anymore.

message 2344: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Lakin wrote: "Twilight is number one on the list.

If Goodreads had a "Like" button, I would've pressed it. :p

message 2345: by Debbie (last edited May 13, 2012 05:16PM) (new)

Debbie I didn't read any of the twilights, so I wouldn't know. I think they are a bit to young for me, kind of like listening to bubblegum music. I like my reading for myself, a bit more mature. I read alot to my grandkids.. hence ALL the childrens books. Please stay on the planet Laken, you never know when a new great book is coming out.

message 2346: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Debbie wrote: "Please stay on the planet Laken, you never now when a great book is coming out." It's a Futurama reference. He/She was just joking.

message 2348: by Hera (new)

Hera Twilight is not the "best book ever" i object.

message 2349: by Kevin Benedict (new)

Kevin Benedict Am I on the right page? It says that Twilight is the best book ever. That can't be right...I think I'm doing something wrong here.

message 2350: by Kaitlyn (new)

Kaitlyn I honestly can't believe Twilight is #1!!
