Angela I'm confused where people are getting the title 'best literature' from. It's a list of people's best/favourite books for crying out loud!!! So you think Twilight is kids junk ... don't read it then! I enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed Rebecca and Jane Eyre and The Shining. OPEN YOUR MIND OR DON'T OPEN BOOKS!

Off my soapbox now!

message 2254: by Ashley (new)

Ashley It's funny: I always thought that I had already read a ton of books in my life. But then I go through this list and I realize... I haven't even made the slightest dent in the literary world. My "Books To Read" list grows ever longer.

message 2255: by Gary (new)

Gary I find this list unhelpful. Like many of the lists on this site, it suffers from mixing "Young Adult" works and books for more mature readers. How else to explain Twighlight as numero uno. The teen crowd, bless their hearts, are enthusiastic and multitudinous in their voting. Let me quickly add that I do not denigrate "Young Adult" books or their avid fans. I simply mean that they are apples in a field of oranges. It would be interesting to see the results of this Best Ever list after excluding all "young Adult" and children's books from it.

Lorraine Mitchell My all time favorite book I think is STONES FROM THE RIVER by Ursala Heigi. I am not much for reading books twice, but have read this one twice and have been thinking about maybe reading it again.

message 2257: by Jonielen (new)

Jonielen twilight is so boring.

Mia Gary wrote: "I find this list unhelpful. Like many of the lists on this site, it suffers from mixing "Young Adult" works and books for more mature readers. How else to explain Twighlight as numero uno. The teen..."

I understand what you are saying but then books like The Secret Garden, Tom Sawyer and a host of others would also be excluded and that would surely be a shame!

Book of Mormon <3

message 2261: by Heather (new)

Heather Shirk Twilight is definitely not the number one book of all time. I mean really it was good but I can think of 50 books better.

message 2262: by ϟEvelynϟ (new)

ϟEvelynϟ Percy Jackson???

message 2263: by Tara (new)

Tara who are these trolls who keep voting for twilight?

message 2264: by Lisa Duncan (new)

Lisa Duncan Why are the Twilight books on this list? Best books ever? I hardly think so. Mediocre writing about a girl who has no life without a boy by her side? Horrible example for girls.

message 2265: by ϟEvelynϟ (new)

ϟEvelynϟ You make a valid point

message 2266: by L'Poni (new)

L'Poni Wow, an erotica is ranked #57

message 2267: by Gemma (new)

Gemma So many books, such a difficult choice!

message 2268: by Danielle (new)

Danielle Georgia wrote: "i agree the amber spyglass is awesome "

I agree, the other two books were amazing too.

message 2269: by Chantal (new)

Chantal Noordeloos Twilight best book? Really??? Tell me I accidentally skipped over Neverwhere in the top 1000 bit? (I gave up after that) because that is a GOOD READ. Though some of the books in the list are brilliant, they are not all in a deserving place.

message 2270: by [deleted user] (new)

'mericans run on Twilight and Harry Potter: let them eat cake...

message 2271: by ϟEvelynϟ (new)

ϟEvelynϟ Hahaha. I prefer Harry Potter though!

message 2272: by Chantal (new)

Chantal Noordeloos Me too

message 2273: by Freddie (new)

Freddie People who voted for Twilight should be banned from every library in the world. Seriously...

message 2274: by Chris (new)

Chris Dorman Freddie wrote: "People who voted for Twilight should be banned from every library in the world. Seriously..."

Seriously...the following comment isn't just directed at Freddie, but at all of the people who've made these kinds of remarks. Can you share what you LIKE rather than putting down what other people like?

BTW I'm not saying this because I'm a Twilight fan. I've never read the book. I'm just fed up with the adolescent "I'm too cool to like that and what is wrong with the people who do" commentary. I had the mistaken belief that Goodreads might have intelligent, adult literary discussion.

You might have a point, but let me clarify just a few things if i may
1) i'm not an adolescent and surely don't need to look cool by saying that twilight is a terrible book.
2) Twilight is first on the list for best book ever. Not "what's your favourite book", but "best book ever". I have no problems with people saying that Twilight is their favourite book, but if somebody says that it's the best book ever written and should remain for the next centuries as a glorious remainder of the high peaks that culture reached in the 21th century i'll surely raise my eyebrows.
3) Discussions can also focus on what people dislike, if we only talk of what we like and everybody agrees than the discussion is kinda useless
4) I voted for Fedor Dostoevskij's Demons, an incredibly deep book. I was especially intrigued by the figure of Kirilov, even though he's not one of the main characters,

message 2276: by [deleted user] (new)

I have read Twilight, and I'll say it shouldn't be near the top 10 best books ever... if we are honest. Nor should Harry (which are actually fairly good books). And it's not like I am trying to look cool by trashing Twllight, it's just I am using the pages for TP now, because I'm saving money for college expenses, and it gets hard to judge a book seriously after a few flushes. Alas I respect all works of art, even the ones that aren't. Don't be so judgmental with us Chris.

message 2277: by ϟEvelynϟ (last edited Mar 26, 2012 05:45PM) (new)

ϟEvelynϟ Hey, people have their own perspective on certain books. Some might say Twilight is an amazing book while others say Twilight is a disgrace. Don't make assumptions like these if you haven't read the books.

message 2278: by [deleted user] (new)

And I make no assumptions after reading it, it is overrated, uses bland language, and cliches like glue is to a kindergardener on an art project (no offense to kindergardeners that is)... and still while others may enjoy this work, I think even then after reading a host of other novels we have to come to judge the greatest books of all time (if we can), but here we collectively said "Twilight is the best book", and that is a far cry from the truth-- If you need proof walk into any college english and bring it up (then run)-- so it comes down to this: is is the most popular book right now, probably yes, the best book ever!!! probably not. But if you honestly believe a thousand years from now scholars will look back upon in most most favorably well then I don't doubt your devotion. I just doubt your ability to see literature or a fad, at least from my point of view.

I hate books on religion, boring, who needs it. There is no god.

message 2281: by Drew (new)

Drew Another terrible list

message 2282: by Stefan (new)

Stefan Yates The fact that Twilight is #1 on this list just makes me sure that I don't need to waste my time voting on this list.

I agree with you 100% Bill, this is BEST BOOKS EVER, not MOST POPULAR BOOKS EVER

message 2284: by Arcsin (new)

Arcsin None of these books deserve to be on the list. Listing YA trash like Twilight, Harry Potter, and Hunger Games in the top 10 is absurd and you all should feel ashamed.

message 2285: by David (new)

David this list is dildos

message 2286: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine Mitchell My goodness, never read Hunger Games, couldn't get into Twilight, loved Harry Potter, but wouldn't put them in top ten. Whatever happened to "to each his own". I am sure that my top ten wouldn't appeal to the
people that put these books on their top ten. But that's OK as long as we all keep reading.

message 2287: by Ben (new)

Ben Twilight definitely deserves that spot at the top. ;)

message 2288: by Jill (new)

Jill Dunlop ...twilight seriously?... and where is delirium!

message 2289: by Abhinav (new)

Abhinav Goodreads wants me to comment on this list where Twilight is #1 best book ever. Yeah, sure, like that's gonna happen!!

message 2290: by Jordan (new)

Jordan Loki Why the heck is Twilight even on this list?

message 2291: by Anushra (new)

Anushra Why is the Night shade seriea not on here?????

message 2292: by Anushra (new)

Anushra sorry i mean series and those bokks totally changed my life, and theres more to come

message 2293: by Kate (new)

Kate Chris wrote: "Relax people! This is not the Oscars. It's just a compilation of individual responses. I enjoyed writing my list and articulating reasons for my choices, and it's fun to see what books / stories..."

But for people who like grown-up books and are on the website to see a few recommendations (say a list like a "1001 books to read before you die" that includes a few more types of books), this is very, very discouraging and doesn't say a whole lot to recommend this site.

message 2294: by L'Poni (new)

L'Poni The Society On Da Run is, in my opinion, the best book ever. Space dragons! The best! Opinion is such a nice word.

message 2295: by Phil (new)

Phil Gwilliam Oh dear is anybody on good reads older than 15???

message 2296: by Junix Jerald (new)

Junix Jerald I can't even understand how they came up with this list. I mean, seriously?

message 2297: by B (new)

B A Twilight, Harry Potter, The Hunger Games? And 3 more Harry Potters and 4 more Twilights??? Really!? Are these the best books you have read seriously? I have two questions then...

1. How old are you?
2. How many books have you read in total?

message 2298: by Paul (new)

Paul Harry Potter and Twilight dominate the top 10 as the best books ever?
Really??????

message 2299: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) Check the lists (under Listopia)..I think the inclusion of the word "Ever" at the end of the title: The Best Books "EVER", says something.

message 2300: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Adam wrote: "It's also flawed in that the same book with a different cover might be on the list twice in drastically different places (see Catch-22 or Lord of the Flies).

At least Mockingbird is #1, though."

i love that book
