seriously, jane austen? errughhh."
pretty much.

Amen and alleluia!

I understand what you are saying but then books like The Secret Garden, Tom Sawyer and a host of others would also be excluded and that would surely be a shame!

Book of Mormon <3

I agree, the other two books were amazing too.

'mericans run on Twilight and Harry Potter: let them eat cake...

Seriously...the following comment isn't just directed at Freddie, but at all of the people who've made these kinds of remarks. Can you share what you LIKE rather than putting down what other people like?
BTW I'm not saying this because I'm a Twilight fan. I've never read the book. I'm just fed up with the adolescent "I'm too cool to like that and what is wrong with the people who do" commentary. I had the mistaken belief that Goodreads might have intelligent, adult literary discussion.

You might have a point, but let me clarify just a few things if i may
1) i'm not an adolescent and surely don't need to look cool by saying that twilight is a terrible book.
2) Twilight is first on the list for best book ever. Not "what's your favourite book", but "best book ever". I have no problems with people saying that Twilight is their favourite book, but if somebody says that it's the best book ever written and should remain for the next centuries as a glorious remainder of the high peaks that culture reached in the 21th century i'll surely raise my eyebrows.
3) Discussions can also focus on what people dislike, if we only talk of what we like and everybody agrees than the discussion is kinda useless
4) I voted for Fedor Dostoevskij's Demons, an incredibly deep book. I was especially intrigued by the figure of Kirilov, even though he's not one of the main characters,
I have read Twilight, and I'll say it shouldn't be near the top 10 best books ever... if we are honest. Nor should Harry (which are actually fairly good books). And it's not like I am trying to look cool by trashing Twllight, it's just I am using the pages for TP now, because I'm saving money for college expenses, and it gets hard to judge a book seriously after a few flushes. Alas I respect all works of art, even the ones that aren't. Don't be so judgmental with us Chris.

And I make no assumptions after reading it, it is overrated, uses bland language, and cliches like glue is to a kindergardener on an art project (no offense to kindergardeners that is)... and still while others may enjoy this work, I think even then after reading a host of other novels we have to come to judge the greatest books of all time (if we can), but here we collectively said "Twilight is the best book", and that is a far cry from the truth-- If you need proof walk into any college english and bring it up (then run)-- so it comes down to this: is is the most popular book right now, probably yes, the best book ever!!! probably not. But if you honestly believe a thousand years from now scholars will look back upon in most most favorably well then I don't doubt your devotion. I just doubt your ability to see literature or a fad, at least from my point of view.

I hate books on religion, boring, who needs it. There is no god.

Actually, I wouldn't have minded you insulting my intelligence if it could've avoided me having to sift through 44 pages of comments to retrieve what Allison said before...."
I agree with you 100% Bill, this is BEST BOOKS EVER, not MOST POPULAR BOOKS EVER

people that put these books on their top ten. But that's OK as long as we all keep reading.

But for people who like grown-up books and are on the website to see a few recommendations (say a list like a "1001 books to read before you die" that includes a few more types of books), this is very, very discouraging and doesn't say a whole lot to recommend this site.

1. How old are you?
2. How many books have you read in total?

Off my soapbox now!
