I would not say the worst I ever read, but nowhere near the best. A couple days ago, I said all these Potter/Twilight "best ever" comments were akin to people who drove a Pinto, Pacer and Jetta and said the Jetta was the best car ever (way too small a universe of knowledge to come up with best ever!).

It's Number 146 on this list, but thanks for the mention, I've added it to my to-read list :)

Bhaskar Bhagyawardhan Twilight? Seriously? Not even a million question marks will suffice it to express my astonishment and disappointment with the stupidity of this list, and challenge its voters.

Graeme Ball My favourite Book is Angela's Ashes
as well as nearly all of the Books by Stephen Hawking

message 2156: by Brook (new)

Brook Bookes Brilliant list of books, I want them all.

message 2157: by Garry (new)

Garry E. I think it's great that we all have different taste considering books. If we all liked the same thing it would be a pretty boring world. Some like Twilight some don't, to each their own. Some people like horror, others prefer romance, Mystery/Suspense. We shouldn't put others down though because they have different taste then us. Enjoy what you enjoy, let others enjoy what they like. This reminds me of the peer pressure certain ones had to deal with while in high school. You like what we like or you can't belong in our elite group. That's BS I'd simply tell them, "then screw your group."

message 2159: by Niels (last edited Feb 04, 2012 05:00AM) (new)

Niels Korteling This is obviously an accurate image of modern culture. The internet-capable are all wasting their lives in social network induced reading (ohmahgawd, twilight is so amazing... I like the emotionlessness of the main character whining about everything and the trouble of people loving her...). While the real literature, that actually requires being awake and a clear mind (to a certain level), is slowly sinking in a swamp of drivle. Screw democracy, Idiocracy here we come...

I mean, the fact that you've read three books in your entire life (three twilight books) doesn't warrant them being the best books. It just tells something about you...

message 2160: by Garry (new)

Garry E. I think it's important to remember just because we may not care for a certain book, doesn't mean someone else won't like it. There's enough wonderful books out there, there's more then enough for everyone to find something they enjoy, thank God we have more then enough to choose from. Different strokes for different folks!

message 2166: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Twilight number one on the list, obviously a lot of readers have only read the one book...... light reading, little substance, predictable plot....

message 2167: by [deleted user] (new)

i don't get it, how come twilight is in the the first place if everyone hate it.

message 2168: by Habz (new)

Adam Kaitlyn wrote: "One of the best books to read. It is hard to tell a tale about an inhuman thing *aka EDWARD* and a human girl *aka BELLA* falling in love. This book proves to the theory that opposites attract."

Writing good human characters that people can connect with on a personal level, almost like a real life friend is hard. Writing about a sparkly old vampire is not. Also, how are vampires and humans opposites?

Well since many people contribute to make these lists and Twilight is a popular book, people who like it vote it towards the top of the "best books" list, and those that don't vote for it on the "worst books" one.

message 2177: by Callan (new)

Callan Jones Good as list

message 2178: by Alice (new)

Alice This list was never going to work and be completely fair unless everyone who voted had read every single book that was nominated. Also, I really think people should stop saying things like 'why is/ isn't so and so on here?, because fair enough maybe the book deserves/ doesn't deserve to be on the list in your opinion, but there must be a reason why everyone else has/ hasn't voted for it, and you'll just have to live with the fact that this list is based on other opinions besides yours. (ok, I'm sorry, rant over)

message 2179: by Mia (new)

Mia Am I the only one who thinks this topic should be put to rest?

message 2180: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan I think that the list should be deleted, as we could never come to an agreement.

I imagined loads of twelve year old girls googling "is the best book ever twilight" and finding this page...

message 2184: by Bob (new)

Bob A suggestion to the developers of goodreads.com. While asking your thousands of subscribers to list which are the greatest books, it seems that this list is skewed heavily by those most active on the site. Perhaps site usage would increase if the list were more egalitarian. I propose that new lists be created for top books by genre.

message 2185: by [deleted user] (new)

Can't there be a BEST BOOKS OF ALL TIME list where lists are not chosen by the goodreaders, but by reviews that we've given? As in books that have been given 5 STARS and the list just goes on? Now THAT'S what I'd like to see.

message 2186: by Nikki (new)

Nikki Can't decide! :(

Bill MJ wrote: "Can't there be a BEST BOOKS OF ALL TIME list where lists are not chosen by the goodreaders, but by reviews that we've given? As in books that have been given 5 STARS and the list just goes on? Now ..."

You're absolutely right. What's the point in rating books if there's no overall chart? On top of the stars, there's an average rating for every book that varies according to the number of people who rated it, so it SHOULD be possible to have a ranking that makes sense even with books which all have 5 stars. That's definitely what's missing here (and yet, it's the most obvious thing to do! Go figure... DesiSmileys.com ).

message 2188: by Itzel (new)

Itzel Twilight?! As the best book ever?! What type of sick joke is this? Twilight and the entire saga shouldn't even be considered literature. Did all the twilight fans come and press the button, ugh! I'm all for equality and people having their own opinions, but even saying Twilight and best book in the same sentence is just no. They shouldn't ever be in the same thought, let alone voted as the 'best book ever'. Let's be real, Twilight is at best a teen girl's fantasy, but placed with classics?! No, just no. This list in my opinion shouldn't be considered, I feel for the guy who created this list. But when I say the entire saga on this list, it lost all credibility.

message 2189: by Marrie (new)

Marrie Who cares that Twilight is here. I personally am annoyed with it but to each is own. A book becomes special to a person by its meaning and maybe twilight means something to certain people that some people don't get. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

message 2190: by Bob (new)

Bob Damika - that is the exact reason to separate by genre. I see no reason why we can't have both. Let there be an overall "best book" which is based on the people who vote on this site. But, at the same time, since each book belongs to one genre, it should be a fairly simple exercise to categorize the votes not only in total, but by genre too.

message 2191: by Itzel (last edited Feb 22, 2012 07:07PM) (new)

Itzel I agree with Dameika and Bob.

As, for Dameika. Yes, everyone has the right to love the books they want to. I'm not saying they can't, I respect their opinion. But to go to the extend to say, that Twilight is in general, out of All the genres and books that have graced this planet, the best book ever?! No. Simply, because everyone likes something, it doesn't mean it's good for the rest of us. That's why, I agree with Bob, there should be a list of different genres. For example, Romance goes with Romance, Horror goes with the Horror and so on.

Maybe, I took this list to seriously. Because in my opinion, and this is MY opinion, Twilight has disgrace literature in general. Does it mean I'm wrong? No. It's my opinion, of course not everyone will agree. And that's perfectly fine, but when you place a ton of books with different genres, it will add up to differently.

I respect others opinion but they should also respect mine. I hope you understand, what I'm trying to say.

Bob Agreed MonsterReader.

message 2193: by Itzel (new)

Itzel Thanks, Bob. You also added an important point.

message 2194: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I don't think there are words to properly express how disappointed I am in humanity as a whole that the Twilight saga is so high on this list.

message 2195: by Itzel (new)

Itzel Steph, I am with you. Twilight?! Really! I mean to each his own but Twilight?! *shakes head* And the funny thing is that their is a Worst book list and the Twilight series was up there was well.

message 2196: by Alice (last edited Feb 24, 2012 10:09AM) (new)

Alice Does anyone else seem to notice that Twilight is also on the top of most "worst books" lists? That's quite an amazing feat. I don't like Twilight but you have to admit that's funny.

message 2197: by [deleted user] (new)

Sorry, but what the hell is twilight doing here? I mean, it's pure shite!

Oliver M Bishop I love all books...

message 2200: by Dana (new)

Dana I am laughing hysterically at this list because if I didn't, I'd cry.

Can some Comp Sci student write a code to down-vote Stephanie Meyer's oeuvre back into the bowels of the written word where it belongs? I've read more articulate and thought-provoking bathroom graffiti. Sorry teenagers: that Twilight is FAR from the best book ever written has nothing to do with my opinion your opinion, or anyone's opinion. I'm pretty sure this could be proven by science, but I think forcing people to read that tripe, even with compensation, might violate modern ethics laws.
