I have to agree. Twilight? What a crock!

message 1952: by Gage (new)

Gage Twilight (Twilight, #1) by Stephenie Meyer
Really? It is not well written. It holds no significant message. I don't understand? How could it have EVER been raised up to a position of the "best book ever" the most overrated book ever would be more accurate.

message 1953: by Bianca (new)

Bianca I read eclipse and the half of breaking dawn but i found it boring.

message 1954: by jillian (jill) (new)

jillian (jill) wow, I don't know what I'm more disappointed with...the quality of the books listed, or the fact that this list may be a pretty good indicator of what a good portion of members on this site are reading.

They need to rename this list...instead of "Best Books Ever", how about "Books I've Been able to Finish"?

message 1955: by Kalin (new)

Kalin Or perhaps "List with Most Comments Putting Down Others' Favorite Books (Thereby Gaining a Sense of Superiority or Something)"?

message 1956: by Marsha (new)

Marsha Do these people live in outer space, amazing some of these books ended up in the top 100

message 1957: by Maya (new)

Maya i think that the golden compass wuz better.....cuz the amber spyglass was to dark for me to like

message 1958: by Bri (last edited Nov 10, 2011 08:16PM) (new)

Bri I still can't get over the fact that the gross majority of this site's entire population is made up of avid 12-year old Twilight fans. I mean, Twilight has a heck of a load more detractors congregated on the internet than in real life, so I always thought that most people here wouldn't like Twilight.
And seriously? Higher than Harry Potter?

Of course, I don't really think that a list like this really works out that well in the first place. Literature is an art form, after all, and art is completely subjective.

message 1959: by Yasa (new)

Yasa Jasim okay

message 1960: by Jacqueline (new)

Jacqueline How can anyone make a judgment unless he or she has read the entirety of it? How does one compare one book from the other? I would also like to add Julius Caesar to this list. It is the best I have read so far. Fahrenheit 451 is extremely close. They both have great meanings.

message 1961: by Wong (new)

Wong Casandra Amber wrote: "This list is a joke!"

IKR.

message 1962: by Sushma (new)

Sushma Joshi This is the randomest list of great literature I have ever seen--I love it! The best part is discovering wierd books you read as a child. I'd forgotten this old favorite "Island of Blue Dolphins" of which I have the faintest memory of being absolutely riveted. Who knew that I was reading a controversial Holocaust book when I read "The Painted Bird" at age 10? Omg, down the hallways of time... this is like taking LSD and I am only on book 1100...

message 1963: by Ali (new)

Ali Wow, this is the root of corruption and all. Twilight!?!? best book 'ever'. There must be a glitch here, or maybe, i dunno, i'm disappointed by the human race :(

message 1964: by Starry (new)

Starry Sky Two of ma fav authors are Stephenie Meyer and Kelley Armstrong. They write good books. :)

message 1965: by Starry (new)

Starry Sky People should read THE ULTIMATE GIFT...its good and heartwarming.

message 1966: by Joshua (new)

Joshua hey how come there ain't nothin but crap on here nothin worth a dime. sure some things are classic but the other's ain't worth nothin.

message 1967: by Ally (new)

Ally Kalin wrote: "Or perhaps "List with Most Comments Putting Down Others' Favorite Books (Thereby Gaining a Sense of Superiority or Something)"?"

I know you posted this roughly a week ago, but it made me bust out laughing. :D

Maybe it's just cause I started paying close attention a few months ago, but MAN the comments around here are awfully redundant!

message 1968: by Ally (new)

Ally Smiley wrote: "People should read THE ULTIMATE GIFT...its good and heartwarming."

I saw the movie (I know they're probably totally different) and I really enjoyed it so I think I will be reading the book sometime.

message 1969: by Jilma (new)

Jilma Ball One of the best books I have ever read is "The Year of Magical Thinking " written by Joan Didion. Ms. Didion shares not only her grief but also the uniqueness of her essence of what is like to be bound by our humanity!

message 1970: by Kalin (new)

Kalin Allison wrote: "Maybe it's just cause I started paying close attention a few months ago, but MAN the comments around here are awfully redundant!"

:)

Had I been in the "holier-than-ye" mood, I'd say these comments are indicative of our age: folks are so keen on SHARING their personal WISDOM that they've no time to waste on the RUBBISH others have already shared.

Luckily, I'm not. *ha-ha-ha*

Allison, are we the only two lurkers left? Erm, sorry, I meant "people who read what other people write"?

message 1971: by Joshua (new)

Joshua people just don't care it's their oipion of what they want not what others make them feel.

message 1972: by Joshua (new)

Joshua books are what you want it to be.

message 1973: by Haaze (new)

Haaze Marsha wrote: "Do these people live in outer space, amazing some of these books ended up in the top 100"

I am a bit surprised seeing Twilight and Potter on the very top of this list (as many others have noted). Are those really what the majority of the people here at Good Reads view as the "Best Books Ever"? My ten year old would probably agree as she has been absorbed into that world for a while..... But seriously...???

message 1974: by Joshua (last edited Nov 17, 2011 07:04AM) (new)

Joshua you have a point there if you want something that should be on best books pick something better than that. pick like macbeth or charles dickens.now these are the classics.

message 1975: by Ally (new)

Ally Kalin wrote: "Allison, are we the only two lurkers left? Erm, sorry, I meant "people who read what other people write"?"

It certainly appears so. There are very few people I see more than once. I've taken to checking this page periodically... I don't know whether I'm trying to torture myself or I just find the redundancy around here amusing.

message 1976: by Ally (new)

Ally Joshua wrote: "you have a point there if you want something that should be on best books pick something better than that. pick like macbeth or charles dickens.now these are the classics."

I just think people should be able to vote for what they want to vote for without someone else slamming their intelligence and taste for picking what they picked.

It is not about slamming people. It is a question about what the list is representing? It is not a "best book ever" list. It is a different kind of "animal" reflecting the cohort voting for these books. The books in the top are representative of the best books of ....hmmm...well.... any suggestions? (so I do not get slammed for expressing my opinion). :)

message 1978: by Davytron (new)

Davytron Twilight is number one? TWILIGHT IS NUMBER ONE? Who are you people on goodreads that let this happen? This is a truly appalling discovery.

message 1979: by Amalie (new)

Amalie Davytron wrote: "Twilight is number one? TWILIGHT IS NUMBER ONE? Who are you people on goodreads that let this happen? This is a truly appalling discovery."

This is an annoying discovery! What the...?! Isn't GoodReads suppose to be the largest reading community online? This is humiliating.

Here's an idea! The ones who voted for that book should make another list "Best Books Ever (I've only read Twilight)"

Joshua Allison wrote: "Joshua wrote: "you have a point there if you want something that should be on best books pick something better than that. pick like macbeth or charles dickens.now these are the classics."

i just think that people need to go and read something different than what they are used to. get out of their genre and try something different.

message 1981: by Kalin (new)

Kalin @Haaze:

A couple of pages back, I made the same argument - that this is NOT the Best Anything List. What is objectively "best", after all?

I also explained what the list creator told me when I suggested he could rename it to Most Loved Books or My Favorite Books.

@Allison:

I keep coming here because, sooner or later, another kindred soul will show up. Which is a WIN, any time. :) But you're right, there's great (and unsuspected) fun in reading the same comment again and again and again... :D

message 1982: by Stephen (last edited Nov 22, 2011 08:16PM) (new)

Stephen I'm guessing that The Compleat Works of Wllm Shkspr The Compleat Works of Wllm Shkspr (abridged) by The Reduced Shakespeare Company was put on this list in error. It's a comic reduction of Shakespeare into a one evening performance. While it's great, I'm guessing that whoever added it meant to add The Complete Works The Complete Works by William Shakespeare

message 1983: by Yesim (new)

Yesim Arditi This is an insufficient list.

message 1984: by Georgia Harry (new)

Georgia Harry I don't understand how Twilight has managed to get the whole series in the top ten, Harry Potter I understand but Twilight?! I may have just lost all respect for everyone who voted for it. Twilight isn't going to be a book remembered for years to come, it's going to die after the last film and no one is going to care ever again. Vote for something that DESERVES to be no. 1!

message 1985: by Edson (new)

Edson I`d like someone to help me finding the title and the author of a book which tells a history of some people on a boat on the sea. They seem to be lost. One day a bird, a big one, appears and make the people very happy. I don´t know which reason leads a man on the boat to shot the bird. Them it happens some bad things from which they conclude it was because they have killed the bird. Another day good things happen. Then they conclude it was because they killed the bird. I read this book when I was a child. This is because I can´t remember the data referred above. Thanks.

message 1986: by Peter (new)

Peter It sounds a hell of a lot like Coleridge's Rime of the Ancient Mariner to me... that's a long lyric ballad in which a bird (albatross to be precise) ends up being killed and bringing bad luck to the crew...

message 1987: by Samara (new)

Samara I didnt know twilight or new moon etc was the worst book in time- my friend loved twilight she reccomended it to me!

message 1988: by Ivy (new)

Ivy I really can't understand how Lord of the Rings got ranked 91. I thought it would have been up there with the top ten :/ This list is a huge joke, but I am content with animal farm being number 13.

message 1989: by Samara (new)

Samara Umm I think this list is bogus exceptt for the twilight stuff lovely bones and those kind of books because I was barely familiar with these boks they looked Ancient. NO OFFENSE to the creator of this list- Im sorry but thats just the eay I feel

message 1990: by Bill (new)

Bill The list is bogus when related to its title, but it's revealing of the intellectual capacities of the majority of people voting on it... and that's kinda sad.

message 1991: by Joshua (new)

Joshua just because you don't like the book doesn't mean that everything is lame or anything but people have the right to choose whatever they are interestedin. it's their choice and they are going to stick by it. people just need to get along and read whatever they want to.

message 1992: by Samara (new)

Samara Exactlylike the exact oppisite of best books ever

message 1993: by Emily (new)

Emily Cook Happy to see the Harry Potter books up top, they deserve it!

But from what I hear of Twilight? It doesn't seem like it should be the best book of all time, or even take 5th and seventh place.

I think this list isn't really about the best books of all time, it's about whose fans are most enthusiastic.

message 1994: by Ally (new)

Ally Haaze wrote: "It is not about slamming people. It is a question about what the list is representing? It is not a "best book ever" list. It is a different kind of "animal" reflectin..."

As Kalin said, what really is objectively "best"? People are voting for their favorite books, so I would say that this list is representing "Favorite Books" or "Most Popular Books of the Moment".

message 1995: by Ally (new)

Ally Joshua wrote: "i just think that people need to go and read something different than what they are used to. get out of their genre and try something different. "

I agree... it's good to try things that are different. But you should never assume that someone has a narrow reading pool just because they have a certain favorite you think isn't that great, which is what I see a lot around here.

message 1996: by Ally (new)

Ally Amalie wrote: "This is an annoying discovery! What the...?! Isn't GoodReads suppose to be the largest reading community online? This is humiliating.

(My case in point, Joshua.)

Amalie, you should never assume that people who like something you hate and/or consider of poor quality are not well-read. I didn't vote for Twilight, but I've read the whole series and I enjoyed it. I have also read 648 other books (that I can remember), including works considered classics and bestsellers and so forth. It's all a matter of personal taste. People don't vote for Twilight because it's the only book they've read, they vote for it because they love it.

message 1997: by Ally (new)

Ally Samara wrote: "Exactlylike the exact oppisite of best books ever"

Actually it looks kinda the same. lol

Samara Haha

message 1999: by Joshua (last edited Dec 01, 2011 08:12AM) (new)

Joshua (allison you have a point)
everybody has some book that they love and others don't really get that and they then bother other people by their coments and it offends the other person. it's like me i have read alot of books going from john grisham to dean knootz and so forth i read everything so it doesn't hurt to just be nice to others for a second or so.

message 2000: by Ally (new)

Ally Joshua wrote: "(allison you have a point)

Yes, exactly! :D Everybody has their own favorites. What I'd love to see around here is less favorites-bashing and more people telling others what they voted for as their favorite book.
