message 1401: by Sunny (new)

Sunny Brite I hate it that at the top of this list are all four of the Twilight books.

message 1402: by Tashiii (new)

Tashiii YES! But i'm pretty sure that if there was a 'most terrible and stupid books' list, the Twilight series would also be on top.

message 1403: by Tashiii (new)

Tashiii Harry Potter should be no. 1!

message 1404: by Karla (new)

Karla Gautreaux I started reading the books on this website mostly to see what upcoming books I wanted to read. After reviewing this list of the best books ever written, I realized that the list is incomplete. The BIBLE. King James version/NIV, whatever version you read. The BIBLE is the best book ever written. All the other "books"(or so-called great literary classics) were written later. The Bible has influenced more people(and still does), been the cause of numerous wars, & still remains as the central focus of organized Christian religions today. The fact that "The Book of Mormon" is on the list does not bother me. The fact that the Bible should be the number one book does.

message 1405: by Jordan (new)

Jordan Neal A sad sad commentary on what could be considered the classics of tomorrow. When Stephanie Meyer comes before Cormac McCarthy (or anyone for that matter) then we have a problem. I guess what this list really represents is which books appeal to the easily entertained masses rather than what are truly the best books ever.

message 1406: by Tashiii (new)

Tashiii The Bible. Seriously? That would probably cause WWIII. I reckon that the most popular books should be no 1 because times and tastes of people change throughout the ages. Classics such as Jane Austen were really popular once upon a time, and people still read her books these days but is it the book that most people would love? No, because times change. i agree with most people that the Twilight series are stupid and should not be no 1, but other books such as the Harry Potter series should because most people have read the series and loved the books.

message 1407: by Kania (new)

Kania why hush hush and city of bone is't these, in this list?

message 1408: by Heather (new)

Heather Oh Geeze. There seems to be an empdemic here. An online and explosive catastrophe where thousands are fuming at their computers, most likely cursing Stephenie Meyer beyond neccessity ... I'm going to slowly step away and simply say that: this is a bad list. Let us leave it at that, shall we?

message 1409: by Gay (new)

Gay I read a great book a couple of years ago called The Crimson Petal and the White by M. Faber. It does not appear on this list anywhere, and yet I thought it was great. I'm not saying it is the best book ever written, but it seems like it would have make the list if S. Meyer's books did. I wonder why vampire books are so popular lately? Seems like such a juvenile subject to me, but then, my opinion is no better than anyone elses. Has anywone else read Crimson Petal and the White? It is long, but soooo good. It's well researched Historical fiction about an 1800's London prostitute name Sugar.

message 1410: by Peter (new)

Peter People asking how on earth Twilight is top of the list, think of this:

How many people who voted Twilight will have done more than dabbled into other literature? Compare that to the people voting for other literature. People who have read Pride and Prejudice will have read Tess of the D'urbervilles, Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights and more beyond. In my case, I've read Dune, Foundation, The Stand, Stranger in a Strange Land, Things Fall Apart, Journey to the Centre of the Earth. Some of those I liked, others I didn't. But the point is that most people who voted Twilight have a narrower pool of reference to draw upon when making their decision.

Now can we stop the self-righteous 'OMG TWYLYT IS NOT BEST U R RETARD LOLZ'? The list is arbitrary and a bit of fun.

message 1411: by Tashiii (new)

Tashiii My thoughts are that teh people who have voted for the Twilight series were and are at the age of round about 9-13, and most likely girls. They voted for these series because that is their first encounter with romance and to them very exciting.

Older and more mature people would definitely dissagre with the Twilight series being on top of the list because they've obviously reads more books that were better and more enjoyable. I think that this website doesn't contain many adults, but certainly contains many teenage and early 20's people.

message 1412: by Kimathy (new)

Kimathy Twilight is on top? it's the worst book in the history of literature. Actually I can't say that. Because it can't even be considered that. Why is it on top? That's where "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" or "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" should be!

message 1413: by Kimathy (new)

Kimathy Guitar Chick-Dolly Dagger wrote: "Twilight at the top? Really?
While I agree that just because a book is considered a classic doesn't mean it's good, but Twilight? Really?
It's not the fact that everybody loves Twilight, it's just..."

I second that motion!

message 1414: by Gay (new)

Gay I have no complaint about all ages being able to vote for their favorite book. Everyone's opinion has value, but in order for the voting results to be of use to me, I need to be able to evaluate the perspective of the voter. If a voter can be identified as a "young adult" or a pre-teen, for example, and most of that ae group has voted for the Twilight Series for example, then I will understand why. If I am able to sort out the vote results for readers over age 50, then it would be more helpful. I seriously doubt that I would care for the Twilight series although I have heard alot of good comments about them. I am glad for S. Meyer's success as a new author, but vampires are not my cuppa.

message 1415: by Tashiii (new)

Tashiii Yes, after S. Meyer's Twilight series, vampires have suddenly became popular. But, I'm not complaining because if the Twilight series didn't come out, Rachele Mead would not have written Vampire Academy.

message 1416: by kenzi (new)

kenzi twilight is the best book on plant earth.the best part of the book is edward. its sooooo romantic. i dont understand why people hate all the books and edward so much.

That's what they do best- inflate the numbers!

message 1418: by Mil (last edited Jan 04, 2011 05:12AM) (new)

Mil Every one has got there taste and frankly the contents of this list aren't all bad but i personally think that "Nun Crosses Crowded Street" a book about a nun who finds God in a local pub whilst tending to a thirst arisin from crossing a crowded street more suitable to be number 1.

I have no idea! Are they joking? His Dark Materials are fabulous and they didn't put it down here :/

Peter Jessica wrote

Why do we need to use demeaning adjectives? We know Twilight is shallow fluff, but rather than abusing them for indulging in escapist reading, why can't we encourage those who have read only Twilight to read other things? An 'if you liked this, you'll like this' sort of thing? Insulting people is only going to make them more insular and all the more likely to rebuff any suggestions made by that person.

This is an internet book club, for crying out loud, what better place to start encouraging these people to read more widely?

Sigrid: hallelujah to that.

message 1421: by Peter (new)

Peter Fair enough. Can't be too careful on this thread, mind.

message 1422: by Dreamer (new)

Dreamer twilight is everywear. i dont care whos team your on. it was cool at first but now its anouing. GET ON WITH YOUR LIVES PEOPLE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

message 1423: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (FrecklesandStripes) It kinda makes me sick that the Twilight books are at the top of the "best books ever" list...

message 1424: by Lucia (new)

Lucia Belakova If this is a sample of our best books, we decreased, really. So you say, that the best books on our planet is Twilight saga. *sigh* That's terrible.

message 1425: by Pablo (new)

Pablo This list should obviously change its title from Best Books Ever to the Favorite Books of Teenage Girls. (Not that teenage girls don't have a right to their opinion.)

message 1426: by Talli (new)

Talli I'm floored as to how the Twilight saga can be so high on this particular list. I'd assume that anyone joining a web site about books would know better. So all I can think is that Twilight fans signed up simply to vote the books to the top, which is insane. What's the point? Do they think if they vote it up to the top it'll suddenly be taken seriously?

I've read all the books, and even liked them back in the day, but no way would I have ever even put them in this category let alone vote them to the top.

So I just started voting for books I like that are closer to the top in hopes of overcoming the Twilight saga.

message 1427: by Lucia (new)

Lucia Belakova Pablo wrote: "This list should obviously change its title from Best Books Ever to the Favorite Books of Teenage Girls. (Not that teenage girls don't have a right to their opinion.)"

Not all books, but quite most of this list is for girls.

message 1428: by Talli (new)

Talli Also, reading through the comments, I definitely agree with those saying that Twilight readers should be given other book suggestions to widen their repertoire. I'm just not sure if they'll actually read something that doesn't have to do with vampires or werewolves. And yes, there are actually very good books dealing with vampires and werewolves, but I do hope they're willing to read books that are different, and in a lot of ways better. Books that make you think and inspire you.

I also think if you've only read the Twilight books (and maybe a few similar books) you probably shouldn't vote on polls like this. You have a limited scope of what the best books ever might be.

message 1429: by Shiloh (new)

Shiloh "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and it may be necessary from time to time to give a stupid or misinformed beholder a black eye."
— Jim Henson

I feel like this quote perfectly and accurately describes this list. Although "Black eye" might be substituted with "Recommend good books" I would suggest the Mortal Instruments to get started as they are the same genre but also a good read.

Bryan Aguilar Why the hell is twilight in the first four slots???

well read it. just read it and read the whole thing and then see how you feel about it. I'm not mormon and I read the whole thing and actually liked it

message 1433: by Hope (new)

Hope You just hate everything.Just pick the books you like

message 1434: by Hope (new)

Hope Okay I agree to that Jamas

message 1435: by Hope (new)

Hope Just so you know half these people are teen girls + me

message 1436: by Ana Maria (new)

Ana Maria This list is soo wrong on so many levels but it it is what people voted for but the title should definitely be changed to "favorite" not "best."

message 1437: by Nadya (new)

Nadya Twilight?

Twilight has captured the imagination of the hormonally charged teenage world. i found it vaguely amusing, but cannot believe that it could ever be considered a classic. this book will never go down in history.

message 1439: by Shelly♥ (new)

Shelly♥ How is it possible that the twilight books and harry potter are better than Gone with the Wind???? It's just a popularily contest. It's the story they love not the writing.

message 1440: by Minewyelet (new)

Minewyelet I need the book of my voted to see

message 1441: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan How is Twilight no.1? I had a quick read on Amazon in their LookInside feature purely out of curiosity and kind of wished I hadn't. Wooden would be a pretty good description. If this is the best there is to capture the imagination of a hormonally charged teenage world then where have all the real writers gone!
Might I suggest trying Brian Lumleys Necroscope series instead.

message 1442: by Hailey W. (new)

Hailey W. Where is Graceling?? And Fire?? Both by Kristen Cashore!

message 1443: by Clare (new)

Clare This list is ludicrous. How can it be taken seriously when twilgiht is the top 4? This should be retitled "popular books" not "best books ever".

message 1444: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Jason wrote: "i think the book of mormon thing must be some kind of in joke...i mean it only takes a little organization and you could theoretically get anything put up in the number 1 position...

and why does ..."
One of the most silly things I have ever heard. Some sort of mormon conspiracy? Do you really think we all gathered together and said, wouldn't it be funny if we all got together and put the book of mormon at the top of the list? No. We all SEPERATELY thought, what's our favorite book? I decided for myself that the book of mormon was mine. The bishop didn't tell me it was what I had to do, I just decided that that's my favorite book. I can understand your confusion, though. Just read the other comments from people that are NOT members of our church, and realize that it's not terrible. I particularly like Jade's comment- the best books ever are impacting books, and it was certainly impacted my own life.

message 1445: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Okay, who REMOVED the book of mormon? Isn't that a LITTLE silly? But that's all right, isn't it. Because the mormons, what, made a CONSPIRACY to get it to the top? Is that the big rumor? Because honestly, we just each voted for our favorite book, and it happened to be that a lot of mormons voted. I voted it because it's a wonderful book. No doubt every other lds did the same. No bishop announced during sacrament meeting, "Brothers and Sisters, I have an announcement to make. It looks like a list on Goodreads has appeared of best books ever, and I propose we all add the book of mormon." We. just. like it.

message 1446: by Simeon (new)

Simeon Hmmm. Interesting list. Can't say I agree with the top 20 though...

message 1447: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) I searched to Andrew, and while I wouldn't vote for it myself that someone would remove it surprises and concerns me... I think it may have been put back on at the end of the list so it can be voted for again. if not maybe you can put it back on?

message 1448: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) I wasn't arguing religion Sigrid. I'm a non-Mormon and totally disagree with them. I just thought that they had as much right to vote their preference as anyone. I pretty much disagree with most of the top books on the list...but if that's what people voted for, it's what they voted for. Most are "fluff" in my opinion. I wouldn't remove them though.

message 1449: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Thanks, mike. By the way, Sigrid, I'm beginning to agree with you- this argument is at a moot point. Hundreds of people have made my point as well as yours. Obviously, us Mormons are going to be biased at least a little bit. It comforts me to know that people like Mike who aren't biased still agree with us, but I do believe it's time to move on.

message 1450: by Hailey W. (new)

Hailey W. If you think twilight is good you must be absolutely inane and not be able to comprehend intellligent books.
