Elana also i love twillight andrew and i also read catcher of the rye and i love to read.

message 1152: by Emily (new)

Emily This is a little random, but did you know that the government can find out if you check out Catcher in the Rye because every single presidential assasin was found with it in his pocket?

message 1153: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Alright, sorry Elana. I actually read and liked Twilight, but the more I see people vote for it, the angrier I get. Opinion, of course, should be free.

message 1154: by Elana (new)

Elana its ok im not even angry Andrew...but some of what u said was true

Most people here seem to be annoyed that this isn't an only-classics list, a written-within-ten-years-ago list, or an anti Mormon/religion list. I have no problem with Pride & Prejudice, Twilight, and the Book of Mormon next to each other on the same list. I disagree that anything YA and recently written is bad quality, or that everything classic is boring old stuff. I just read the Hunger Games and loved it, and now I'm reading Emma by Jane Austen and think it's amazing. Calm down, people, there's nothing wrong with variety.

Reading, any type of reading, is good for the soul. There are some 13 year old girls whose taste is not our taste. Isn't that preferable to the fact that some 13 year old girls don't/can't read?
Quit trying to be a literature snob. Enfold every ones taste. Who among us has read EVERY classic or can NAME every classic. I will venture a guess, but you won't like it."

I completely agree.

message 1157: by Emily (new)

Emily Just because something is a classic doesn't mean it's well written and vice versa. Some people feel that, for example, Oliver Twist, is a weakly written novel. I don't agree with these opinions, but that doesn't mean they're wrong. It's an opinion for crying out loud! An opinion is an opinion is an opinion is an opinion. Everyone doesn't have to agree!

message 1158: by [deleted user] (new)

Twilight? What is wrong with you people?

message 1159: by Haris (new)

Haris hehehehe

message 1160: by Jameson (new)

Jameson did they just poll in SLC, Utah and Independence, MO? geez

message 1161: by Randi (new)

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) Look, religieous views count for best books ever I believe. The bible has certainly changed a lot of lives (including mine) so I can't see why the mormons can't have their day either.

message 1162: by Aaron (new)

Aaron I'm going to be depressed for weeks seeing that we're so far in the gutter to have Twilight in 3rd place. Like having a porn flick at the Oscars.

message 1163: by Yiwen (new)

Yiwen I used to like Twilight for some retarded reason, before I realised it was an epic failure (No offence to Twitards). Although I do love Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, Septimus Heap, Deltora Quest (fantasy) yadda, yadda, yadda...
I just going to shut up now...=]

message 1164: by Aaron (new)

Aaron I actually have nothing against liking Twilight, but people need to admit to themselves that it's masturbatory fantasy (which is okay) and not deserving of literary praise.

message 1165: by Yiwen (new)

Yiwen Actually, kicking Twilight off the list is a good idea, replace it with Septimus Heap or Deltora Quest =]. If I see one more book with a pale girl with blood on her neck on the cover, I will vomit...seriously!It's all got basically the same plot, girl falls in love with vamp, love somehow forbidden, they get married anyway (something like that), and they live happily ever after.

message 1166: by Khan (new)

Khan So according to goodreads Twilight is the worst book ever, but also the best Young Adult novel and third best over all?

Something is rotten in the state of Denmark. I think goodreads should do something about such an ambiguous message.

message 1167: by Smm (new)

Smm A lot of these books are very advanced, but they are all very good! Even if i had not read them I have heard that they are great!

message 1168: by Smm (new)

Smm Paul wrote: "The Book of Mormon? You gotta be kidding me. I'd put "Where the Wild Things Are" as being more "literature" than that book.

I agree, this list is loaded and biased.

"

"Where the Wild Things Are" was a great book! Maybe "The Book of Mormon" was sending you a message or more informational.

message 1169: by *Taria Star* (new)

*Taria Star* Glenn i love these books

message 1170: by Daniela (new)

Daniela Twilight? Really? That's not a joke?

message 1171: by Terry (new)

Terry Perrel Unbelievable. I guess all the hardcore readers were too engrossed in a book to vote. Except for the wee ones who've only read a handful i their lives.

message 1172: by Terry (new)

Terry Perrel It also looks like a mothers' list, the books they read along with their children. . .

message 1173: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte How is Twilight number three and ABOVE Harry Potter, no less?? That is shameful. I've read all of the books, and while I will not pretend that I didn't enjoy them, there is absolutely no reason for Twilight to even be on this list--that is unless "best books" is determined by "largest cult following"....

message 1174: by Bob (new)

Bob Where is the bible??

message 1175: by Aaron (new)

Aaron Benjy wrote: "Where is the bible??"

My guess is there's too many versions of the Bible to vote on--could be why the Book of Mormon made it up that high. Though I'm still on the side of leaving religious texts off the list.

I completely agree with you!!

message 1177: by Bob (new)

Bob I presume that a quarter of the people who voted for twilight have probably not read it. They probably voted for it because someone they know loved it or because the series is very well known. The listopia people should make it so that you can only vote for a book that you have read. That way the polls would be far more accurate and the books that are amazing but not as well known as books such as twilight could have a chance to be at the top of the lists.

Totally agree. I won't pretend like I don't like Twilight, because I do, but there's just no reason at all for Twilight to be the number three book EVER. Like... really?

message 1179: by Bob (new)

Bob If twilight never became or movie or was advertised so much i doubt it would even be in the top 10 on this list. Like i said before(message 1206)at least of a quarter of the people who voted for it have not even read it, they probably watched the movie or heard about it from an advertisement or a friend. Most people who are not avid readers will usually put a movie ahead of any book no matter how well it was written. If many of the hidden gems or other somewhat recognized books had movies or we're so well known they would probably all be ahead or slightly behind twilight on the list. I saw at least 20 books on the list that we're better then twilight. I can't say twilight is a bad book though, it was a pretty good book that i would rate four stars but many of the books on that list are 5 stars. Most of the books at the top of the list are there because of their recognition not completely because of their content but they are all still good books. If any of the amazing five star books at the bottom had as good of a recognition they would have surpassed twilight by now.

You're totally right. Honestly. 99% of all the Twilight haters are just annoyed with the overhype. Seriously, were there "Twihards" in 2005 when the book came out? Really.

message 1181: by Bob (new)

Bob Very true.

message 1182: by Bob (last edited Jul 14, 2010 06:46PM) (new)

Bob Most people didn't know about the series till last year when all the movie stuff and the articles about it appeared in the newspapers. I wonder what a twilight hater's group would say if you asked why they hated it? I'm not a twilight hater but the overhype was highly annoying and i bet most people, even the readers obsessed with twilight would agree that the overhype was annoying. If the movies and all the advertising had not occured i bet that half the people who read the book would not have read it and that most people would not have rated it or reviewed it so well. I bet twilight would not be anywhere near the top of the lists if it wasn't for the massive overhype. Half the people i know who read it have read it just so they could tell people they read it. I just searched the (i had no idea this book would be so good list) and twilight wasn't even on it which means that everyone who read twilight knew about it being good so they must have only read it after the overhype.

message 1183: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia Perez i can't believe Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is #6! How could they!?It should at least be higher then Twilight! Hum...At least spot #3...

message 1184: by Pixie (new)

Pixie This is a very strange list. It is supposed to be the best books EVER, but so many of them are flashes in the pan that certainly do not belong in the same league with the ones that have lasted for hundreds of years, and the ones that are likely to last for hundreds of years into the future. Loving a book now is not the same thing as thinking it will have lasting impact over vast expanses of time.

person Pixie wrote: "This is a very strange list. It is supposed to be the best books EVER, but so many of them are flashes in the pan that certainly do not belong in the same league with the ones that have lasted for ..."

Wow, I could not have said it better. Really, I won't pretend like I don't like the Twilight series, but number three? Really?

message 1186: by Nikki (new)

Nikki Davison I guess it all just depends on what you think of when you hear "best book ever". If you assume that means it will have a lasting impact on society then I could see why you are upset. However, I think a lot of people vote for books based on how much they actually like them.
And I did want to say that it's kind of entertaining to read about people thinking it's stupid that the Book of Mormon is up there and then following up with people who are upset that the Bible isn't (btw it actually is up there). Just goes to show how few people have actually read either of them.

message 1187: by Pixie (last edited Jul 15, 2010 08:40PM) (new)

Pixie I don't mind what other people choose. And it is understood that when someone says something is "the best ever" they usually don't meant that literally. I was just expressing my own opinion, that it's kind of funny to think of the name of the list and then see what's on it. I didn't comment on the bible discussion before, because I was just thinking about lasting literature, but...

The Bible has influenced an enormous amount of great literature. I don't think readers could call themselves educated who weren't familiar with it. Certainly they would not get as much out of reading a lot of "the classics" if they didn't have that knowledge under their belts. The only thing I can imagine the Book of Mormon to have influenced, literarily, is possibly the HBO series Big Love. :) However, if people want to vote for the Mormon book, I can imagine it being around for a long time, whereas many of the other "best books ever" will probably fade away and not be part of the cultural landscape hundreds of years from now.

message 1188: by Andrew (new)

Andrew I'm Mormon, so I'm very completely fine with it being at the top. In fact I utterly agree. But what really cracks me up is that the bible is the lds edition.

Its not that mormons "congregated". Its simply and honestly an incredible book, whether you believe or not.

Sarah Ok, I know that different people have different opinions, especially about books. But having ALL of the Twilight books in the top 20? Are you kidding me? I've read all four, and yes, I consider them a very (extremely) guilty pleasure but on a list of best books ever? They all read like really bad fanfiction.

message 1193: by person (new)

I disagree with the very last part, but I agree with you on everything else you said. I definitely love to read them in my spare time (I mean, they're crazy fun to read), but there is just no way they are the best books... ever.

message 1194: by Kira (new)

Kira Ok seeing twilight on this list makes me want to jump off a clff and maybe take it with me :]. Most others I agree with, although i havent heard of many.

Aaron Marla wrote: "this is the second list--worst books was the first--and i'm done. this is madness. i mean, how many mormons congregated to vote the book of mormon as a top 100 book? really?"

I would put money on this being exactly what happened with both the Book of Mormon and Twilight.

message 1196: by Ashleigh (new)

Ashleigh Among the classics (which are also given the lower ratings) the crappiest books know to man are placed right next to them. *cough cough TWILIGHT. Damn twilight all you need to read that book is the reading comprehension of a 7 year old. All the real books should be way up on the list such as Fahrenheit 451, The Clockwork Orange, and The Fountainhead plus a lot that aren't even mentioned. And all the stupid books should be OFF it.I see most of the stupidity on this list but the question is where has the intelligence gone to?

message 1197: by person (new)

person Ashleigh wrote: "Among the classics (which are also given the lower ratings) the crappiest books know to man are placed right next to them. *cough cough TWILIGHT. Damn twilight all you need to read that book is the..."

I'm sorry. Reading and liking the Twilight books does not make me have the "reading comprehension of a 7 year old". Everyone is so bias, seriously. Just because I'm thirteen, like the Twilight Saga, openly say so, and defend the series, does not make me a ditsy, blonde "Twihard" (whoever invented that retarded word). Let me tell you something, Twilight is an entertainment book. Those who read it read it for enjoyment or fun. I totally and completely agree that Twilight does not belong on The Best Books Ever list. But does that mean that you have to bash everyone who voted it there? I've never read Fahrenheit 451 or The Fountainhead (even though I want to read both of them), so how can I possibly vote for them? I'm sure none of the "Twihards" have ever read The Fountainhead, either, so which book with they vote on?

And honestly, don't you think it's just a tad rude to say that every single person on the planet who has ever enjoyed Twilight has the comprehension of a 7 year old and to wail out, "Where is the intelligence?!"? That's ridiculously bias and even more annoying than the "Twihards". And seriously, that's not the best way to be making friends.

Enjoying the Twilight books does not make you stupid. I have a 4.2 GPA and A's in every class. My English grade is an A+. My sixth grade English teacher loved the series. That's completely bias and seriously rude.

And by the way, I just can't take you seriously with all those nasty run-on sentences and no punctuation, telling me that I need to read the classics and that I have the reading comprehension of a toddler.

message 1198: by Aaron (new)

Aaron She's not saying people have the reading comprehension of a 7 year old, she said that's all that's needed to read it. Which is actually correct since it's written at about a 3rd grade reading level.
