Al This list is a bad joke of ill taste. Twilight has no business being on this list. It is a horrid disgusting book. What is Gone with the Wind doing so far down the list? I believe that msut be one of the best books ever written and needs more votes.

This list sucks.

message 52: by Mallory (last edited Dec 26, 2008 04:04PM) (new)

Mallory Hey, please do getting mad at all the "Mormons" for voting. Even people who aren't of that religon have said that it's a great book. It is truly life changing.
I'd like to thank the people who don't disrepect others opinions. I'd also like to thank the people who agree with me that some of those comments don't need to be that rude about religous books.

message 53: by Al (new)

Al I def wasn't saying anything about the Mormon book. I didn't know Twilight was a religious icon. Wtf...

message 54: by Phil (new)

Phil Elizabeth wrote: "If you're groaning or confused about The Book of Mormon being at #1, I ask - have you ever read it? It's a fair question... I do agree w/the Twilight comment though - UGH. But hellooo, Farenheit ..."
I have read it. Twice, in fact, because I thought I must have missed something the first time. It is along with Dianetics the only religious tract penned on this continent. Still it is absolute dreck.

message 55: by Brittany (new)

Brittany how can you not love twilight? its one of the best love stories ever created.

message 56: by Al (new)

Al Ahahahaha! Wow! I really, honestly do not respect that opinion. At all. And I don't really care, if that seems rotten of me. Twilight is the last book I would ever say is one of the best love stories ever written. And I have barely read any love stories at all! Twilight is a joke to the world of literature.

message 57: by [deleted user] (last edited Feb 25, 2009 03:25AM) (new)

what do u mean, The Shack?

message 58: by [deleted user] (new)

Lord of the flies is up there!? I did not enjoy that book. It was disterbing and I just didnt like it!

message 59: by Al (new)

Al Oh please, spare me the bull crap, I wouldn't care if Shakespeare himself sat down and taught you everything you know about literature. It also doesn't matter how many contests you won or if your work is published or not, does that make your opinion superior to mine? Stephenie Meyer has her worked published, but I would never take one thing she has ever said seriously. Anyone can get there work published nowadays, so no, I do not respect your opinion just for that. And I'm not sorry if I'm being rude, I never read I needed to be polite about any of this.

message 60: by Mikayla (new)

Mikayla Maybe you should read the book of mormon before you trash it... I mean if youve never read it than who knowes- maybe it is the greatist book ever...

message 61: by kathleen (new)

kathleen Book of the Mormons?!?!?

message 62: by Jenna (new)

Jenna the book of mormon??? r u kidding me?

message 63: by Toria (new)

Toria The twilight books are some of the best books written in my opinion! But just because I said that doesn't mean there aren't other books out there that may be better....thought I seriously doubt it... :P
lol. Different people have different tastes thats all. People shouldn't be so judgemental.

message 64: by Jed (new)

Jed It's New Years day and I obviously have too little to do today.

Pretty funny to me that if someone votes for a book you hate, you get all perturbed about it.

There are MILLIONS of published books and BILLIONS of possible readers. How can you be stunned to discover diametrical opposites?

Just to tell on myself, I picked Altered Carbon as my #1 because it's the book that influenced me most in the last few years. So, to me, it's a great book of all time that I am familiar with.

No, I don't think Altered Carbon "beats out" Johnny Got His Gun - but at this moment in my life, I own Altered Carbon and I don't own Johnny Got His Gun, although I'll surely never forget it.

Yes, The Book Of Mormon thing is a bit asymmetrical since it is a religious obligation to vote for it. Its what god wants after all. I'm surprised The Bible didn't make the list. However, if you own The Book Of Mormon and you can enjoy it over and over, it is (your) best book of all time. Maybe you can sell your copy and buy Altered Carbon or The Skinner or Jennifer Government.

The last paragraph is humor and no disrespect is meant toward Mormons or The Book Of Mormon.

Well, actually, one of my favorites is "Wicked" and it managed to make the "Worst" list.

right you are, enough of this twilight already

message 67: by Laura (new)

Laura Why are any of the Twilight books on there?

message 68: by Erin (new)

Erin i loved twilight whoever put it on the worst list does not have a heart that book is sooooo romantic and perfect

message 69: by Chita (new)

Chita This list makes me realize, i need to read more...

message 70: by Bill (new)

Bill The Book of Mormon? Really? Gee, I wonder if maybe, just maybe, a bunch of Mormons stormed the web site. Very suspect...

message 71: by Russell (new)

Russell Ahhh, Mr. James Joyce,

I am sorry to say that your works of literature, though thoughtful, esoteric, deeply philosophic, and universally critically lauded, are certainly not the best books ever and fall far below those vampire books by Stephanie Meyer. Let's face it, Edward Cullen is just so damn CUTE!!!! (Hoping all the cute little tweenies who flood the quiz with Twilight questions get the sarcasm here).

message 72: by Russell (new)

Russell Jazmine wrote: "Twilight is the best book I've read in my entire life! It is awemazing! I love the whole saga and Edward Cullen!"

I would certainly love to see the other awemazing books you've read in that long, illustrious life!!!!! (Trying to beat you on exclamation points!!!!)

message 73: by Scott (new)

Scott What the fuck! This is the funniest fucking thing ever! Great list people. CLEARLY this is the definitive list of the absolute Best Books Ever.
Fucking ridiculous... and fucking hilarious.

message 74: by Duchess32 (new)

Duchess32 I'm annoyed with Twilight also.

This list has some of the same books as the worst books list. lol

East by Edith Pattou. . .anyone read?

message 75: by Andrew (new)

Andrew i think it halarious that half thease books are on the worst books ever also

message 76: by Tracy (new)

Tracy Twilight is the 2nd best book EVER!But the first one is Host by stephenie meyer

message 77: by Mallory (new)

Mallory I like Twilight. I think it was an enjoyable book. But I don't thing it should be on the Best Books List. It's just a popular pop culter book. I don't feel that it should be put on the same list as the classics. I do like the book though so don't beat me up for not voting for it on this list.

message 78: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Law Bruce wrote: "I'm not going to argue with the Book of Mormon--either all religious texts are valid for a list like this, in which case it's merely interesting, or all religious texts should be off the list, in w..."

Stephanie Meyers does not deserve to touch this list. At the time I am writing this, she is number one for Worst Books, which was very gratifying for me to see. She has got to be one of the worst authors ever to make a fortune from their pathetic attempts at writing. Harry Potter took me by surprise too, but Twilight is so much worse in so many different ways.

message 79: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Law Greg wrote: "Wow, some of these folks need to read more. Or age more. Or go to school, or something. I mean, really."

That is so true.

message 80: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Law Paul wrote: "The Book of Mormon? You gotta be kidding me. I'd put "Where the Wild Things Are" as being more "literature" than that book.

I agree, this list is loaded and biased.

"

Have you read the Book of Mormon? Or are you still reading picture books?

message 81: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly I think that there is a problem with the title of the list--Best books ever written--and the method of collecting data--by self selecting vote, with multiple votes possible. However, rename the list as "your favorite books" or "most popular books among Goodreads readers" and I have no problems with it. It is kind of fun to see what the favorite books are, even the most ridiculous things on the list. It definitely says something about Good reads participants as a group.

message 82: by Tracy (new)

Tracy every body has a different opinion to what goes where

message 83: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie The comments here are interesting and people react so passionately when a book they like is panned! I wish there was a list called "pretty good books" or "middle of the road books." A lot of titles on the best and worst lists were fine, or ok or not that bad. Worst and best is pretty extreme. Aren't the truly best and worst pretty rare with a lot of so-so stuff in between?

message 84: by Cody (new)

Cody i love how a large majority of this list is also on the worst book ever list.

message 85: by Truthmonkey (new)

Truthmonkey Obviously no one is going to agree with every book on any best or worst list, as other people have pointed out. I actually love both Jane Austen and Stephenie Meyers. Do I think they are equal in talent? No. But I enjoy reading both of them, and many others. And I think that's the point. Why are we judging what other people are reading? Think about all the people who wouldn't even need a site like this because they don't pick up any book...

Charmaine Anderson Marla wrote: "this is the second list--worst books was the first--and i'm done. this is madness. i mean, how many mormons congregated to vote the book of mormon as a top 100 book? really?"

message 87: by Charmaine (new)

Charmaine Anderson Maybe all those that have really read the Book of Mormon voted for it. It is a pretty amazing book when you actually read it.

message 88: by Heather (new)

Heather Charmaine wrote: "Maybe all those that have really read the Book of Mormon voted for it. It is a pretty amazing book when you actually read it. "

The only way to find out if it is good or not is to read it. I KNOW it is a good book by reading it several times. I've read it so much because it IS good. It has gotten me through rough times and lifted me when I've been down. It's more than just a book, it's a testimonial. I would like to add my testimony of it being a truly unique piece of work.

Heather Charmaine wrote: "Marla wrote: "this is the second list--worst books was the first--and i'm done. this is madness. i mean, how many mormons congregated to vote the book of mormon as a top 100 book? really?"

"

I don't think the Mormons need to congregate, To know if it's good is to read it as an individual and get your own opinion of it. And I feel that those who vote it as one of the 'best' books are those who have read and enjoyed it on their own.

message 90: by Heather (new)

Heather Grant wrote: "Which 'Book of Mormon'??? There have been over 4,300 changes since the first book of Mormon."

There have been no changes since it was first translated. We believe the Bible to be the word of God AS FAR AS IT IS TRANSLATED CORRECTLY, we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God.

message 91: by Heather (new)

Heather Grant wrote: "This is just not true. Sorry, the Book of Mormon has had many changes since it first came out. This is historical fact. Wishing it away will not make it go away. You are free to believe as you ..."

And I will know what I know

message 92: by Marie (new)

Marie Yeah I'm an adult and I'm a bit obsessed by this series.... a lot of women at my church are, it's a really fun read!!

message 93: by Sonia (new)

Sonia I remenber really enjoying this book.

message 94: by Charmaine (new)

Charmaine Anderson You can read the original manuscript of the Book of Mormon and find out that most of the changes are grammer and punctuation. No doctrinal changes were made. Joseph Smith was a young man with very little education. He never could have made up this book. The stories are important to teach us the cycles of good and evil and clarifying the teachings of the bible. It is another testament of Christ.

Amen, thank you Charmaine...

message 96: by Mad (new)

Mad are people on crack?? TWILIGHT as the best book. ever. above classics like To Kill a Mockingbird? I'm embarrassed with everyone who voted for that. That book was terribly written. Even my sister, a fifth grader, admitted that it could use a lot of work. It shouldn't even be on this list at all.

message 97: by [deleted user] (new)

It makes me so sad that Twilight is anywhere on this list. I hope Twilight mania ends soon.

message 98: by Kaitlyn (new)

Kaitlyn One of the best books to read. It is hard to tell a tale about an inhuman thing *aka EDWARD* and a human girl *aka BELLA* falling in love. This book proves to the theory that opposites attract.
