The reason Twilight should not be on the best books ever list is because it is not a classic and should not overrun To Kill A Mockingbird and The Chronicles Of Narnia.

message 803: by Hollie (new)

Hollie Done The Twilight Saga are the 4 most amazing books ever written. They inspired me to read and I will remember them for the rest of my life.
Thank you Stephenie Meyer.

Mike (the Paladin) I'm happy you found books you like, and I won't go on about it. Let me point out that there was a time (I'm closing in on 60) when I'd have said that The Wizard of OZ was my favorite book of all time. Since then I've read a lot of books and while I'd still rate that book (a classic) high, others have superseded it. I that after a while the same will be true of you and these books. that you'll still remember them fondly but have found many others of even greater depth.

Yes yes yes!!!!

But Twilight as 3rd? come on. I can see top 100 maybe but 3rd?!?! no

message 806: by Fightin (new)

Fightin Boner what a laughably bad list

message 807: by Alisha (new)

Alisha Good job, Ender's Game in the top 50. Loved it "back in the day," love it still. Timeless stuff indeed.

If you really think that Twilight is THE BEST BOOK of this last century..or even of this decade..whatever this little category is, then you are a grade A moron. Forget your little speech about how we should leave people like you alone. You're just a moron. I like the books, but come on. The best we have? Try reading something nonfiction for starters. Try something where the main characters aren't teenagers. You must just looooove Harry Potter. *rolls eyes*

It's definitely not the best book ever. None of them are. Ridiculous. Doesn't it just make you sick?

You can't even spell amazing. Your vote doesn't count.

Carlotta Endre wrote: "Otis, this is a great idea to find the best book. I have to think about this in more detail to narrow it down in my own mind.Too bad we can not vote for three or four and then narrow down the list...."

Shut up, Endre. Quit being a pansy. We're adults. If we feel like using "big people" language that you can't handle, then get off the site.

I retract previous comment. Your comment doesn't count because you use the term "awemazing", AND you are listing Twilight as one of the best books ever written. Double whammy.

message 816: by Carlotta (new)

Carlotta Did anyone read The Diary of Anne Frank??? I notice that most comments are either about Twilight (gag) or The Book of Mormon... Did anyone read the non-fiction option here and realize a young girl at that time had such depth? WHO ARE THESE READERS?

I'm sure to get kicked off for being insulting, but before my send off, I think you little Twilight twats should read something of substance. And you Godly people should pick up something about persecution!

I think they have some good options, but I agree about this list making one sick.

yes actually I have thank you very much. It was a good book. I agree with twilight however, it is poorly written and totally killed what the world has every known about vampires. They are blood sucking horrible monsters. NOT loving, beautiful creatures. However I have to disagree with what you are saying about the Book of Mormon. Let me ask you something, have you every read it? No? That's what I thought. How can you critique a book and hate people for liking it when you have never read it?! Try reading it first and then you can say whether or not you disagree or agree with it.

Mike (the Paladin) Personally I am indifferent to the BOM being here. It is an important book in history and therefore I can see it's inclusion. I have only read "in it" and have no urge to see it as more than literature.

As for Twilight (and it's clones...well that's not accurate as there were books about "lonely romantic" vampires before it. Twilight is just the most well know). I "feel" the same way about using one of mankind's oldest mythical monsters as some sort of sympathetic love interest. The actual vampire of legend was not even a human anymore. it was "something else" that had taken possession of the person's body...after "eating them". The consumptions of "blood" was seen as the consumption of the "life force". So, I dislike the use of vampires positively...i feel like if you find an "undead" in your story, stake it.

This is a discussion about "brain candy" there is one novel "out there" where the monster hunters are stymied in their attempt to "take out" a nest of vampires because the local mayor wants to "open a dialog" with the poor misunderstood creatures. they can't proceed until the mayor gets eaten.

;)

message 820: by [deleted user] (new)

Why is Jane Austen on this list!? Nah, I'm just kidding.
But in all seriousness, why the fuck is Twilight on there?

message 821: by Heather (new)

Heather "Just to let everyone know I plan to ignore flamers. I believe the language we use to express ourselves tends to reflect our intelligence and reasoning ability."

Thanks Mike I fully agree and have always said that myself.

message 822: by Bushi (new)

Bushi Mushi Wow...this site might loose its credibility fast. I don't think I can trust its recommendations if they're based on this pool of users. I mean, Twilight listed in the top 10?

Mike (the Paladin) I think a lot of people possibly stop by without voting, can't be sure though.

message 824: by CoolBreeze1978 (new)

CoolBreeze1978 Twilight huh? Sheesh.

Mike (the Paladin) Have you voted on the list? I've voted on a few books that are my favorite...there just seem to be a lot of Twilight fans out there. I to don't see how it can be rated as among the best books ever (unless you say that with a sort of valley accent of course).

message 828: by Sara (last edited Jan 23, 2010 11:16AM) (new)

Sara These coments are just making my day better and better

Mike (the Paladin) I took a look, and while I don't like a lot of the books on this list...I notice that now on the "other list" (where I won't be posting) there is already a discussion on "what other books might be excluded" or another word might be "banned". Why don't you just take all the books you lot disapprove of and burn them? Oh wait...that's been done before hasn't it? Well you all enjoy your exclusive list where you can "ban" any book you disapprove of. I'll stay here and argue the point for those who haven't read the books I find to be better to try them.

Mike (the Paladin) For everyone else I reiterate my earlier notice that I intend to ignore flamers, trolls, and those who can't seem to express themselves without vulgarity. Most here seem to manage it, most.

people have also read Garfield comics. Based on your comment should that also be on the list?

message 834: by Heather (new)

Heather If they think Garfield comics are the best, then by all means they can put it on the list. Whether it gets very high up is another matter.

message 835: by Mike (the Paladin) (last edited Jan 23, 2010 08:59PM) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) I keep asking, have you voted on what you think are the best books? I do wonder that some books get so many votes, I always assume it's a lot of young readers who spend more time on the computer.

Oh and if I were going for a cartoon book, maybe Charles Schultz would be better? :)

message 836: by Megan (new)

Megan Mweemba Okay.... I do like Twilight, but... Why is it on there? Best book EVER written? I'm sorry, but no.

message 837: by Megan (new)

Megan Mweemba Okay it's actually "best books ever". Same thing.

But I actually don't think that there IS a best book ever, since everyone has different opinions. But maybe that's the point. Oh gosh I'm not making sense, am I? Don't mind me. I'm just tired.

message 838: by Jerica (new)

Jerica Megan,

I definately agree with you. We all have our different opinions so there will always be a lot of favorite books.

Jerica

Candace Don't knock the Book of Mormon until you've read it. It certainly changed my life. Once you have read it, really read it, with a prayer in your heart to know if it is true, then you can come back and say that!

message 840: by Candace (new)

Candace The twilight series was a good read, but certainly not some epic that should regarded with the same respect epic novels. Sorry but...

message 841: by Sara (new)

Sara The best book ever, by people who are voting individually, are the best books ever, to them. This isn't a professional panel where literary analysts sit down and create a list of the absolute best books ever written, based on plot, characters, structure, language, thematic elements, cultural and historical impact and significance, etc. etc. etc.

It's a website poll. Nuff said.

message 846: by Lana (new)

Lana This was a hard list for me. I wanted to vote for many great books on the list, and like other commenters I wondered how other books even got considered. I imagine people are using different measures of best book ever.

As I started to vote for allot of books I thought, they can't all be best...even if many are great. I decided that for my standard of "best book of all time" it must hold a little more weight in the world then just sooo awesome and a favorite. So I opted to vote only for those books I both loved to read and, from my point of view, had an impact on the world or many people.

I would be interested to know the criteria other used to determine the "best book of all time" for them. What did you use as your definition?

I would base my vote on books that I love. Since I can't speak for anyone else, I can only rate books that I feel I couldn't live without having.

The way you respond to a book is going to be unique. You can read the same book I can and not come out feeling the same. I think you should rate any book based on how you feel and forget how you might think it has impacted other people. What did that book mean to you?

message 848: by Heather (new)

Heather You may love the books. But do you think that it is the 3rd best book? is the question. [Just wondering, not trying to be mean or anything:]

message 849: by Nicole (new)
