Simon, hi. Just saw your question. Thanks for it.

Kant might argue that it was his duty to make my verse or prose more sensible and logical, and correct my vision so that it was morally upright, even though he may not want to carry out those duties, but being Kant it's the doing of unpleasant duties that counts more on this earth and in heaven than doing something pleasurable that may also be a duty. In short, he'd be John Gardnerish as an editor. But it's possible that maybe after being resurrected some centuries after his death he'd be a little more humble and mellow.(less)

Jeff’s Recent Updates

Jeff Bursey and 17 other people liked Jonathan's review of Selected Stories:
Selected Stories by Kjell Askildsen
"I sat down on the chair. It was made of black plastic. I picked up the book. I read it. It contained a number of short stories. The short stories were made of short sentences. The sentences were dry and shallow. The sentences were dull. I was tired. " Read more of this review »

The Dark Forest by Liu Cixin
"Fascinating to reread this one post COVID and in the midst of the Gaza genocide.
Running through in the background and sometimes in the foreground is the very fickle reaction of the public at large to certain decisions their rulers are making in light" Read more of this review »
Jeff Bursey added a status update: In reviewing George Saunders' Vigil in the lRB, when Adam Mars-Jones says that "the eye, accustomed as it is to punctuation that aims to smooth the experience of reading rather than roughen it up," he reveals himself, again, as a pissy little reviewer with a conventional mind and a censorious streak. His engine of thinking is as powerful as a hand crank. Yes, mark me down as undecided.
