Re-reading A Game of Thrones is like reading I, Claudius with some The Borgias thrown in. That's what I've always liked about the book. Yes, there's magic too, but it never quite feels otherworldly to the point of redundancy. I read this years ago and decided after watching the awesome HBO series (OMG Sean Bean *squee*) to revisit Westros and its seven kingdoms.

to be honest, i'm not sure i gave this book a fair shake. i only made it through the first 50 pages before i decided that i could not slog through another boring, overwritten fantasy novel about men fighting over a throne.
