ONE OF THE MOST UBER-AWESOME BOOKS IN THE WHOLE DAMN WORLD!!!
I've informed my family that I want a Thunder Tiger for Christmas. I've reassured them that it won't eat the mailman, but would be great for the annoying little nimrods who always walk on the lawn.
In spite of some minor misgivings, that I was setting myself up for disappointment (the way a glowing but VERY wrong review for Nightshade, along with the lack of diversity swore me off of L.A. Times YA Book Reviews forever),Stormdancer was s ...more

But, but, but . . .

UPDATE 6/11/12: This book is seducing me to the point of no return. And I also have the hots for it, too. Can I have sex with book?

Pretty please? :3
Come on! Don't stop two lovers from true lust!! :'(
UPDATE 10/13/12: Yes. I got this book right now. *Book looks at me seductively* We are finally together. *chuckles* Now if you'll excuse me, I have a date. *closes the door and leaves a DO NOT DISTURB sign outside*

To be honest, I was skeptical of this book’s self-proclaimed status as “Japanese steampunk.”* Still, I decided to give it chance because I love griffins and the book blurb promised me griffins. Sadly, my skepticism and doubts were not unfounded — Stormdancer’s use of Japanese culture as a convenient exotic setting was off-putting, to say the least.

4.5 Stars - Great start to series.
When I first looked at this book, the words “Japanese Steampunk” made me giddy with joy. The seamless blend of mythology and technology along with a more traditional coming of age tale sets the stage for an epic fantasy series. It also made for an engrossing and enjoyable read.
For those readers who desire more magic in their stories, the islands of Shima are rich with legends, gods, oni, thunder tigers (griffins) and more. For those who crave more tech in their ...more

My Review: I was lucky enough to snag an ARC of this book back in August, but because of an unexpected illness, I am just now getting around to reviewing it. And I'm not going to lie, I have never been so conflicted over how to rate a book. I originally gave Stormdancer a 3 star rating, but after really thinking about it and hoping the sequel will help smooth out the kinks, I'm going out on a limb and giving it 4 stars.
