I struggled with this book, but I think some of that was because it was audio. I wished for the hard copy so I could flip back and forth. Instead, I used Spark Notes to figure out which character was which. There were a LOT of characters.

I have read this before, but it’s been awhile and my students are studying it so I needed a refresh. I love the interlocking stories, although it’s a little hard to keep the eight characters straight in my head. Some of the things the characters endure are just heartbreaking, but it’s inspiring to see how they carry on. I also love how the characters are developed and how symbolism and imagery are used. As a daughter, but not a mother, I tend to sympathize more with the daughters, but this book
