This book made me realise that Kristin Cashore is excellent at story, and not so great at plot. Bitterblue suffers from too much (and too complicated, and involving literal ciphers fortheluvva!) plot overwhelming the shape of another excellent coming-of-age feminist story. In Bitterblue, everything is connected. Old characters return in an amazing fashion (particularly Fire). Characters you might overlook become important when you least expect them and character who’s endeared themselves to you in the beginning, might not to matter much later on. But, like the title says, the novel is about Bitterblue and, while you might think it’s not enough… it is. Bitterblue is an amazing, strong character and by the end of the book I wanted to know more about her.

1. Much of the book felt like a frustrating waiting game.
2. There were too many peripheral plots and twists. It felt like the central story was... Waiting to be revealed.
3. I would have preferred the story of Brigan's daughter, now commander of the Dellian army.
4. Saf was a frustratingly hollow character. I was left vaguely disliking him by the end.
5. I still enjoy the world of the gracelings and monsters though. ...more

Loved it, but "Graceling" is still the best out of the 3.
