More of a thematic elaboration than a straight-up sequel to Graceling, Fire is richer, deeper and less conventional. I am coming to love Cashore's brand of feminist ya -- thoughtful as well as passionate -- and that her coming of age stories involve as much healing and recovery and unlearning as growth, and are shaped so vividly by the tricks fantasy allows, by the dangers and damage of being female and therefore monstrous in some way. ...more
