What Members Thought

Every line of verse was deliberate and vibrant. Lai brings to life pre-unification wartime Saigon through the eyes of a 10-year old girl -- I could actually feel my senses awakened by her lyricism. Of course the heart of the story centers on how a child survives profound loss and trauma, aching for her beloved home and homeland, her father missing in action, her lovingly cultivated papaya tree.
