Ash is a good girl who adores her mother and father. Her mother follows the old ways of 'superstition' and fairy tales (regarded as being real accounts) being held as sacred. The magic of the world is leaving and fairies are hard pressed to find anyone who still possesses it. Ash's mother curses a fairy who pursues her to fall in love with a mortal girl (not knowing that it would be her own daughter). He watches over Ash as her mother dies.
