Bittersweet, funny and poignant, coming of age tale, with a critical look at a society where poverty, alcoholism, bullying, and a general sense of despair are all the norm. I liked it.
Minor criticism: As I read, I kept thinking it seemed very ... weird ... that I couldn't place the time period, and that some of the overt racism experienced by the POV author seemed like something that should be reported to police and news media, but instead was accepted as unremarkable.
