The premise behind this book (a reversal of historical racial inequality in having black people rule and white people serve) is an original one that works really well.

Sephy and Callum's relationship is a literal struggle because they live in a world of segregation. Sephy is black (a cross) and Callum is white (a nought) which means they are forbidden to see each other; but despite this, they still do.

Okay - the ending - what!!!!!

The book is a page turner, well paced and the characters are well drawn. I enjoyed seeing them mature through the pages, and though it's inevitable what happens between the two, I have to say the ending blew me away. Not what I was expecting but the most authentic ending that Blackman could have devised.

Really enjoyable and one that will continue to haunt me until I can track down the next book.
