Like this story. I like that Octavia Butler wrote this. Not sure when she wrote it but it is pretty telling that she tried to foretell what might happen. This story is set in 2025 in California, where an eighteen-year-old African American woman empath finds that she must leave her cozy and protected community and all of the feelings she suddenly finds herself unable to suppress. This is the height of science fiction.

This book quickly draws you in. As I read, I had to remind myself that it is a work of fiction, because some aspects of it mirror 2020 reality so closely. The protagonist's commitment to faith is admirable, I am curious to see if she holds on to her faith as the series continues... ...more
