First Butler book!! So many late nights because I could not put this one down. Since reading Ta-Nehisi Coates’ The Water Dancer, I have been in love with magical realism in historical fiction. This was a lot easier to read but a lot harder to digest. Humans are just mad complicated
Butler doesn’t save the good from sorrow, and she paints the wicked with the brush of human understanding. So whose side is she on, anyway? That’s her remarkable achievement, telling such a nuanced story about America’s most complicated institution—slavery. The book started slowly but picked up intensity as I became invested in the slave and free characters of the antebellum world. Highly recommended!
Had high expectations. It didn’t even meet the low ones. Poorly written, no character development, little depth, didn’t evoke emotion. The only reason I finished it, was because I still wanted to know what would happen in the end. For that reason, 2 stars.
