When I read this back in the 1980's, I didn't think black people wrote science-fiction. Of course, I didn't know that Samuel Delany (another favourite of mine) was black. It seemed the publishers went out of their way to "whitewash" him (not to mention he's also a gay man).

I can't believe I'm just now reading this book. Butler's Wold Seed is one of my favorite books. This book is almost better than Wild Seed. It's hard to choose.

I found this book pretty gut wrenching. This was especially true since I saw 12 years a slave not too long ago so had some very vivid visuals still stuck in my head to go with some of the scenes.
Dana is stuck going back and forth from her present life to the time when her ancestors were slaves.
