This was a young adult fantasy set in Nigeria. Right off the bat I was grateful to read a novel that is completely about African youth; white folk never appear in the story and are only mentioned with an appropriate amount of skepticism. Okorafor sets up a universe that is magical and fun, reminiscent of Hogwarts, with just the right amount of danger and suspense to keep me clambering for more.

This is one amazing fantasy. It also has made me realize that there is so much more to Nigeria than I had in my head. I am once again happy that I am reading in the time of the Internet when I can look up and see images of Zuma rock - which looks amazing. I also listened to Labaja music on Youtube or I wouldn't have had a clue.

So much fun. I can't wait to read more in this series. Especially now that the bulk of the pesky world building has happened. There was a little too much exposition going on, but I understand because it is so against the grain of Eurocentric-based fantasy books.

Sunny is an in between girl. She is American and Nigerian. She is black and albino. She comes from a normal family but she has magic. She is referred to as a ghost girl and her magic reflects that. She discovers herself along with her friends help and they become an amazing group. They take on a baddie. a serial killer called Black Hat, that is bent on raising a creature that would destroy everything and everyone for the fun of it.
