This was a young adult fantasy set in Nigeria. Right off the bat I was grateful to read a novel that is completely about African youth; white folk never appear in the story and are only mentioned with an appropriate amount of skepticism. This is one amazing fantasy. It also has made me realize that there is so much more to Nigeria than I had in my head. I am once again happy that I am reading in the time of the Internet when I can look up and see images of Zuma rock - which looks amazing. So much fun. I can't wait to read more in this series. Especially now that the bulk of the pesky world building has happened. There was a little too much exposition going on, but I understand because it is so against the grain of Eurocentric-based fantasy books.

Characters are strong and interesting. The magic system and the world is full of color and is so original. A real sense of mystery and menace made me keep turning the pages.

She discovers herself along with her friends help and they become an amazing group. They take on a baddie. a serial killer called Black Hat, that is bent on raising a creature that would destroy everything and everyone for the fun of it.
