My second dark YA romance of the day. I really disliked reading Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet in high school (it inspired me to read more Shakespeare, I thought that his plays had to be better if we still had to read them). Romeo worked really well as the tragic villain. Will be very interesting to see where Jay takes the next book.

Li esse livro em uma noite, terminei às 3 horas da manhã, porque não consegui fechar o livro. Adorei o que Stacey criou, transformando a bela história dos famosos amantes desafortunados em uma história de vingança com um toque sobrenatural. Distorcer o romance mais conhecido do planeta foi uma jogada de mestre, e a autora escreveu de uma maneira muito convincente e No primeiro capítulo, há a narração na noite de núpcias de Romeu e Julieta, e é algo tão belo, que foi doloroso de ler, pois eu já sabia que Romeu causaria sua morte naquela mesma noite.

"Seu nome ainda me fere, evoca fantasmas de emoção humana que assombram minha pele roubada. Uma parte de mim se lembra da sofisticada dor do amor, do sofrimento esmagador da perda."

Adorei o romance que acontece no livro, Julieta tem sentimentos por uma das almas gêmeas que deve salvar, ela jamais poderia sentir isso. O romance é fofo, me deixou com lágrimas nos olhos e frio na barriga. Os personagens não foram muito aprofundados, mas me conquistaram. O personagem Romeu é foi algo difícil de desvendar para mim ainda, ele às vezes parece tão frio, mas em alguns momentos em que narra a história, descobrimos uma das razões pelas quais ele pode ter matado Julieta, e você percebe que as coisas podem ser diferentes daquilo que imaginava, mas não significa que elas realmente são. Adorei a Julieta, foi uma personagem bem escrita, com suas cicatrizes, medos e mágoas. Gostei MUITO do livro, apesar de achar o sobrenatural explorado de maneira um pouco confusa, o romance e a história compensaram muito!

Hm, how should I begin?

I like weird stories and plots and books so I was drawn to the concept of this one. Also, come on, who doesn't love a good retelling? And I have an affinity for some Shakespeare related things.

This plot was weird and interesting--it delivered on that.

My criticisms are several so I'll start with them:

Plot

This started seeming like it was going to be the anti-romance novel mostly because of Juliet's unbridled contempt for Romeo. It wasn't. Because although Juliet is fil Hm, how should I begin?

This plot was weird and interesting--it delivered on that.

My criticisms are several so I'll start with them:

Plot

This started seeming like it was going to be the anti-romance novel mostly because of Juliet's unbridled contempt for Romeo. It wasn't. Because although Juliet is filled with Romeo-hate for so much of the book, by the end she has a moment of self-discovery and comes out of it. It's very much a romance novel in every sense.

I thought this book was going to tackle & subvert the usual critiques of Romeo & Juliet, one famous one being Love at First Sight--and it didn't do that. Because as it turns out this is what Juliet has with Ben. Also, while there is a long critique of Romeo basically being a shallow manipulator (let's face it, he sort of is) with his beautiful words, Ben does the same thing. He even tries to kiss her the first day they meet. And he really doesn't ever let up. At all.

On the flip side...

I really didn't buy the ending where Juliet throws herself into Benvolio's arms and he's just OKAY WITH IT. No. Are you kidding? The daughter of a rival family that was married to his cousin crawls out of a tomb and starts declaring her undying love for him. He just comes around so quickly, never mind the fact that she's supposed to be DEAD. Never mind what era this is set in.

Characters

Ariel: Ariel's hatred for her mother never quite made sense to me because her mother doesn't seem like a wholly terrible person. In other words, aside from being a single mother with some alcoholic tendencies, she obviously cares about her daughter. However, I think I understand where the author might have been coming from. Maybe since Juliet is on the outside looking in (or inside looking out :D) she sees--and by extension the reader sees--that Ariel has a warped perception of reality.

Ben: Ben was actually one of the most annoying characters to me. For one, his dialogue annoyed me. Why is he speaking Spanish at random? I get that he's of Mexican descent, and people do do this in real life. But Ariel doesn't know Spanish. Why would he be speaking Spanish to It makes very little sense and that consistently irked me throughout the book.

His back story was intriguing and humanizing. His characterization isn't even that bad. But still, one must ask ourselves why Juliet has to keep reminding us that he's a good person? I think in some ways he's a bit too forceful. Juliet pulls back/hesitates/pushes him away and still he's a lot like Romeo in his "YOU LOVE ME! I KNOW YOU DO!" never letting up attitude. I found the professions of undying love even marriage annoying because I couldn't buy that a teenage boy would say all the things Ben wound up saying so easily. It just felt ... like a bit much. But then again, maybe it just fulfills the hopeless romantic angle the author wanted to take. *shrug* I also think he fulfills certain Latino tropes/stereotypes which I'm not sure is a bad thing or not. Just something I was hyper-aware of. I'm still trying to figure out how Benvolio and Ben could look identical, considering their ethnic differences but whatever. Minor issue I guess.

Romeo: I felt myself extremely annoyed by the fact that Romeo was so consistently awful. I kept wanting him to change and he never does. There were glimmers of hope, but come on Romeo--knives and guns? Then again, he is tortured and I keep wanting Juliet to realise it but it just never happens until too late.

Juliet: I feel like I can't say anything about Juliet that hasn't been said already but I truly hated her indecisiveness. It felt like every single chapter was "I like Ben--no I can't like Ben! This body isn't mine--I don't care about Ariel--ok I care--but still Ben"--eventually I was just wishing she would take Romeo and let Ariel come back already. But then she had to keep reminding me, "I'll never love Romeo, never ever ever."

Gemma/Nurse: A lot could be said about Gemma but I'll hold my tongue. The one thing I didn't get was how Nurse was in her the whole time. Were there clues?? What about Gemma's thing with Dylan? Did Nurse have a thing with Dylan? I won't even go into this. Just confused.

Overall

The writing is beautiful! The metaphors, the descriptions...

The twists were great. The whole thing with Ambassadors and Mercenaries was confusing at times but that neither group seem to be clear-cut good or evil is interesting. That Juliet was actually meant to help Mike & Gemma the entire time and that falling for Ben was really a weird fluke was cool. Also, Juliet spent so much time wanting to fix Ariel's life but in the end Ariel's life "didn't even matter." That Romeo never killed her after all. A lot of twists. Overall I liked that things weren't quite as expected.

I'm glad that Juliet gets her happy ending, or seems to-- but it was just a little too unbelievable the way it wrapped up. ETA: The word I'm looking for is convenient

Since the moment Ben was introduced, ever since Juliet-as-Ariel saw something "knowing" about him I was waiting to find out who Ben *really was*. The entire twist of Ben being Benvolio still managed to surprise me. Which was great!

I like that Juliet has a moment where she learns loving & forgiving herself is important too. It's a good message for teens.

I am intrigued by what the sequel might promise: Romeo might be the lead in the next book. He's crazy. But then again, everyone is crazy. ALL OF THEM. So, in that sense I guess I'm okay with it. It makes things interesting. In the original play, the title characters are fuelled by passion. So this is an experiment. What happens in the modern era with a bunch of people fuelled by these passions?

But I'm disappointed too that all the positive changes in Gemma and Ariel's life might have turned out to be in vain. I think it's sad Ben dies so needlessly.

I wonder what role Gemma might play. What kind of person will Ariel turn out to really be? And will Romeo as Dylan continue to be a total scumbag? We shall see... (hide spoiler)] ...more

The thing that I loved most about reading this book was that it took one of the greatest love stories from Shakespeare and put a twist on the love and the relationship that Juliet and Romeo have against each other. Now I do understand that not a lot of people will like this book because it main story is a classic. However, I liked that the idea was taken from the original story and a personal twist was added onto it.
